why play a lesser player there though? why force foden in when he plays more games wide for city anyway?

Palmer plays wide a lot as well, it's not about picking the best 11 players and forcing them in to the same team

I'm not forcing anybody to play anywhere. They would all start in their favoured positions that they play for their clubs but as the game evolves players move about. Bellingham didn't just play as a 10 last night, he was everywhere. If there are 2 players who want to play in the same position then the best gets picked, I don't want us to go back to picking the best 11 players and shoehorning them into whatever system we choose. Hasn't Foden said that he wants to play more centrally?

If MR thinks that our players should be versatile to play in different positions then surely we can expect Foden etc to be able to do it. Bellingham isn't just a 10, he can play anywhere so if he drops alongside Rice then Foden or Palmer can become our 10.

If you look at Palmer’s heat map for Chelsea, his role is basically a second RW for Chelsea.

Again, neither are better than Bellingham. I’d justify playing Bellingham as a CM if we played 3-4-3 but not as one of the pivots in a 4-2-3-1.

I'm struggling to watch the Ukraine game dispassionately, as I'm feeling for the Ukrainian players carrying the weight of their nation, plus feeling for those Ukrainian people who are trying to glean a small bit of comfort/pride via their football team. I know this is nothing in comparison to what's going on in their nation, but I am feeling for them, and willing them to get something from this match.

Bellingham played mostly as a 10, yes he can sometimes drop deeper to get the ball but he still plays as a 10 and 10's do drop deeper sometimes.

Why does it matter where Foden wants to play, he mostly plays as a wide player for City, there is not decent argument that he should play 10 over Bellingham.

I was lucky enough to see them at Wembley in a WC qualifier in 1985, Georgi Hagi was some player

There's no doubt Bellingham can play as an 8, and although that still gives him plenty of license to get forwards I think he should have as little defensive responsibility as possible and that means playing him at 10.

I would personally go Wharton alongside Rice but I think we'll see Gallagher or Mainoo there next game. The Trent experiment didn't work.

It's too early for Foden to be 'dropped', but I would like to see Gordon get a go on the left at some point.

Finally an upset (according to prematch odds) pretty much all the favourites have won so far, Denmark the exception.

I’ve never seen anything from him to suggest he’s good enough for this level. Got routinely exposed in the Prem. Honestly think he was one of the worst starting CB in the league the year they got relegated.

Doesn’t seem to be an area of depth for Belgium when they’re still selecting Vertonghen Into his late 30s

Yea, the decision to only bring one recognised and injured (!) LB was bizarre at the time and seems even stranger now.

I guess the plan is to limp through the group stages with a lopsided defence and Shaw be fit for the knock outs. Albeit you’d hope he’s fit enough to play the last group game to get any match rustiness out the system.
Taking a player in the hope that they're fit for the latter stages never works. Almost without exception.

I'm fairly sure that even if "fit" Shaw wouldn't be fully up to speed even if we did reach the semis!

Yeah first 20 I really liked the look of the setup. Couldn’t put my finger on what changed but we went really sterile after that.

Foden can definitely work at LW (think he played well there v Senegal at the last World Cup) but he absolutely has to hold width better than he was last night. I get he wants to play in more central areas but receive out wide and play your way in, rather than starting inside. Equally, not helped by Trippier doing next to fuck all at LB. As said previously, I would be interested in seeing him starting in the 10 with a more natural left winger (Gordon) out there, but I get the feeling we won’t see that in which case it pains me to say I wouldn’t start him.

Trent at CM needs to stop now. There is upside to it but the negatives hugely outweigh the positives. Once Serbia started to get a foothold in the game he largely went missing.

Also worth thinking about what Bellingham was doing last night. He effectively played that box to box role as he was tracking back a hell of a lot. Great at times but left Kane isolated as hell. If he’s going to do that anyway we may as well play the midfield combination that half the country wants to see.
On your last point, I think a Foden as a 10 with genuine width left and right might give Bellingham more of a foil to pick and choose his breaks forward.

On your first point I would argue that both Walker and Tripper could offer more. I can only remember walker getting past Sala a few times. This also would hamper out foreward play... both Saka and Foden play in systems where they work with full backs that get beyond the attacking play with regularity.

Cheering on Slovakia with the missus. The Slovaks are pretty shocked they're winning and thought they wouldn't have any possibility of getting anything. For what it is worth, I think they would be good value for 2-0 up as it stands. Of course when Sideshow Bob is involved, there's always a chance. Like others have said, I don't get it with him. Every time I watch him play - he's fucking shite!

Really impressed how quickly they dealt with that offside. They’d still be looking at that in the prem.

Are we talking about the 24 goal +10 assist, writers association player of the year & players player of the year winner Phil Foden?

He's a good player but England have a lot of good players in the attacking positions. He could easily be dropped for one of the other good players in those positions but he's made out to be a generational talent and it would be a travesty if we can't get him in the team I always hear said by pundits and media

There doing the same to Trent Alexander Arnold and now we end up with him playing central midfield

When they were at the peaks of there powers I would put him on a similar level as Rashford, Sterling, Joe Cole and similar to Palmer, Saka now.

It’s frustrating to watch as a neutral, but it’s effective in terms of killing Belgium's tempo and momentum, and refs don’t seem to clamp down on it or punish it (doesn’t seem to affect added on time)

I was thinking it’s something we just don’t have in our arsenal as a side, but at the same time sort of glad we don’t.

Perhaps we should appreciate some of these boring 1-0 wins when some of these lower rank teams have took the lead against Italy, Netherlands and Belgium.

Just get the job the done!
