Mourinho's hardly the free-flowing Brazil-1970 football we expect either.

Mourinho actually seems like a manager who WOULD navigate through a tournament successfully

2x champions league
1 x Uefa cup
1 x Europa League
1 x Conference league
1x Fa cup
1 x Spanish Cup
1 x Italian Cup
4 x League Cup

He can navigate through tournaments quite well

It matters very little because he's just joined fenerbache

Let me get this straight ...linekar and
Richards are delusional, all the pundits and press that have had enough of Southgate are delusional ..

Rangnick failed (with Austria who are very average )
Nagelsmann failed (even though they deserved to beat the eventual tournament winners ) but fair enough they went out

Howe hasn't won anything , besides triple promotions through the football league and took Bournemouth to the Premier league and then took Newcastle to the champions league .

And you'd offer Gareth southgate a new contract

Tournaments are judged on outcomes and Germany won’t be saying ‘oh we deserved to beat Spain, therefore this tournament is a success’. They would consider it a failure just as we considered losing to France in 2022 as a failure despite Kane missing a pen late on.

Howe is one of my favourite managers in the Prem, but he hasn’t won a major trophy yet - no, League 1 and Championship titles do not count as such. Managing the pressure at Bournemouth is a lot different to England.

I’m just being pragmatic Evo and with respect, I don’t think you or others are. Who would do you think would do a better job than Southgate who’s interested in taking on the role?

The outcome of our tournaments under Southgate is that we've won the same as we did under steve mclaren .

We also play shit football , time to move on

While we don’t actually know who’d be interested and who wouldn’t, take the dreadful football Southgate enjoys serving up and put it up against what Howe or Potter tried to do. I’d also argue that Howe has had to manage under very raised expectations and pressure at Newcastle.

That’s a valid opinion, but who do you hire? You have stated you wouldn’t want Carsley who is supposedly the favourite to take over should Southgate walk.

We must approach the best English prospects first

An Irish u21 manager cannot manage England, he will be crucified beyond belief if he fails

Also being a decent manager at youth level doesn't automatically mean it will translate ..

Sure Spain did it , but he also won the nations league which according to English fans is a bag of shite and a glorified bunch of friendlies , turns out winning breeds more winning

Portugal won the euros in 2016 then the nations league in 2018

Spain won the nations league then the euros .

France won the world cup then the nations league

Why are you so fussed about the style of football? Only the results matter. The important questions (rhetorical) to ask is why did we lose to Spain?

More importantly, who is best placed to take the team to the next level. As for Potter and Howe, both managers I really like and want to see do well… Have they proven that they’re winners to get us over the line?

The argument for Southgate walking is that he’ll have to consider if he believes he’s taken us as far as he can.

Losing games like last night in a slightly better manner means nothing to me. The next time I follow England away I want to see Kane or whoever is skipper lifting the trophy even if the style of play is dross.

He has to go just because the noise about him staying would be unbearable.

It’s time now. He gave it a good go and changed the atmosphere but he hasn’t won anything.

Lee Carsley (from Birmingham - not Irish) is the England U21 manager and won the tournament with players currently in the senior setup.

That experience of international tournaments and that environment is more valuable than someone used to the daily grind of managing a club team.

To be fair, the squad consisting of:

Ashley Cole
Ferdinand
Terry
G Neville
Lampard
Gerrard
Scholes
Beckham
J Cole
Rooney

Was very strong on paper. The problem was it came at a time when the opposition was also much stronger than it is now.

A lot of the golden generation were part of the group that didn’t even qualify for Euro 2008.

The england team that lost to Croatia

Carson, Richards, Campbell, Lescott, Bridge, Wright-Phillips (Beckham 46), Gerrard, Barry (Defoe 46), Lampard, Joe Cole (Bent 80), Crouch.

Was clearly an overlap of generations with player like Beckham and campbell coming to an end .

The period between 2008 and 2016 was pretty miserable as the players available just weren't really that good mixed with some ageing greats

Potter couldn't cope at Chelsea. Howe should have achieved more so far at Newcastle and appears poor at dealing with the media spotlight which is essential as England manager.

I suspect we will return to being a last 16/Quarter Final team.

As pointed out above 2008-2016 was just a poor mix of players. Up to 2006 though, it was very strong.

Was expecting yesterday to be his last game regardless of winning or losing, guess we'll find out soon.

Some will probably disagree, but think overall he can leave with his head held high.
Bought the team forward from the shambles it was at the time (completely forgot about Sam Allardyce until I read an article on the BBC earlier), but feel England have hit a ceiling now and it's time for a change

I was a huge fan at the start . He got the best out of an ordinary bunch with the emphasis on solidity and set pieces . However in the last few years it feels like the quality of players has overtaken what he can bring to a new system and style of play . It just feels to rigid and almost stifling at times .
He has brought success and a lot of highs but ultimately didn't deliver in the end .
It's time for a fresh start with a manager who can reinvigorate the style and system

If he goes Potter looks the obvious choice for the FA especially as no compensation due.

Not inspired by him or Howe the other one who I dread is Lampard…

Not sure really people say 2004 was it's peak when Portugal knocked us out .. we lost to France in the group that tournament too

Beat Croatia 4-2 in the groups and Switzerland 3-0

No, the FA invest in this ‘pathway programme’ and it’s worked quite well for other nations.

That and, there’s not outstanding candidate. There are people out there throwing out Klopp and Pep’s names out there as if they’re actually viable candidates.

If there was a successful English manager who’s won major trophies, I’d expect Southgate to stand down on his own accord. There isn’t.

The only other non-English managers would be Poch (who struggled under the pressure at PSG and Chelsea) and Thomas Frank (won no major trophies).

In all seriousness, who would you replace Southgate with?

I would approach Newcastle

Howe is good in the dressing room , is a nice bloke , plays attractive football , develops players well .. Anthony Gordon has improved under him at Newcastle already as an example
