And it's because we have SO MANY really exciting players.

But it's like they are playing in strait jackets

I don’t even mind us setting up defensively to start with, keep it tight, but make some fuckin subs when we’re losing control

There’s players/starters out there that have played a game or two more than needed and certain players (palmer, Gordon, Toney etc) that should’ve had far more minutes

Onto the semis though !!!

OK, so after torturing themselves for weeks over where Callum will be going or will be staying or staying or going, they come back down to earth with the devastating defeat to Spain.
They need to get over this buckel in the strasse by means of the refuge offered by the local kneipe.
Thing is, neither of them drink alcohol.
So what do this pair order......?

Two points:

1. Contrary to popular belief, I think we set up today exactly the same as we’ve played most of our games so far. The idea that we were better today is for the birds. Exactly the same performance as against Slovakia (in which I didn’t think we were that bad) and the same weaknesses showed. We generally control games ok, but there’s little killer instinct on the rare occasions we do gain momentum.

2. Please for the love of fucking Christ play Anthony Gordon.

After getting to the English pub in town at 7:30am and shockingly still having to queue to get in for a 9am kickoff, I rolled in at 6pm drunk as a skunk to a surprisingly understanding American wife

Passed out on the sofa just woke up it’s midnight

Can’t sleep what a day for it

Really this is how west ham fans felt with david moyes , and I probably get it now .

Southgate can do well but reality is nobody is happy with the style of play and want him replaced regardless

Exactly.

I have always, always stuck by England, through thick and thin and have always gone into every tournament with hope and a little bit of belief we can make a good fist of it.

If you look back through the threads, I have never been that harsh on Southgate.....until now. And it's now, because we have such very talented flair players. Not saying this is the best team we have ever had, because it's not, but we have a such rich vein of talented individuals and we have seen what they can do for England when we take the shackles off. We have looked a top side at times, with fast counteracting, fluid football, cutting teams apart

That seems to have all gone.

Yeah, sure we are in a semi-final now and that's great, but we were literally seconds away from going out of the competition in utter humiliation. We have been very lucky at times.

This is has NOT been a grand plan and it's nothing to do with character either. Two moments of magic from two players have saved us.

It's great we have made the semi-finals, but if we get beaten easily by the Dutch, it will still be a very poor tournament from us.

We have barely laid a glove and hardly had a shot

The manager is very poor. I think that has now been proven. He's just stood on the touchline hoping one bit of magic can win the game for us each time.

Obviously want us to win the whole thing, but it's all been rather hollow and there is nothing I have been proud of, past the penalties.

I don't hate England. I love them. City and England for me.

I just know we are better than this and what we have shown.

Sad that I am not enjoying the tournament as far as England goes and I didn't celebrate last night. All I felt was relief.

As much as I hate the performances right now, Southgate will leave with the second best England record for a manager ever by far.

In spite of him not because of him , I reckon me or you would have done the same tbh

What did he do yesterday to get us through ? Pick the 5 takers

We're in the semi final of a major tourmant after beating Slovakia and serbia in regular time

From the way he went on about the penalties you’d think he was aiming for them from the start. And I’m not joking.

I don’t really mind if we have to play defensive football to win things, but I think it’s defensive by default. There is no attacking cohesion and people can see the key issues, such as Kane dropping deep. Clearly Southgate is afraid of the big decisions, defined by his inability to be proactive and change the team when the game starts to turn. The claim is that he isn’t telling the team to drop deep, so they’re doing it of their own volition and yet we are playing the same lineup game after game, save one change. As I’ve mentioned above, I think we ended up playing the same system yesterday as we did vs Slovakia purely because Trippier was fit enough to play. Was checking this on average positions and it seems Kane was literally deeper than our entire midfield yesterday:

England are in the semis after only beating Serbia in normal time.

France are in the semis without scoring a goal in play.

Call it off, nobody deserves to win it.

He’s been very lucky over the last two games. Weren’t the two goals the first shot on target in both games? If so, that’s shocking.

Based on the teams that have actually tried to score goals and not bore everyone to death, it should be a Spain-Netherlands final. Hopefully at least one of those two make it or England/France decide to suddenly start attempting to play football.

He isn’t. The pundits seemed all converted yesterday while the players seemingly can’t get enough of it.

Just as it always does, the result is clouding a lot of opinions. Which is fine, until playing that way against better opposition gets punished.

No. The first on target came in 51st minute, when it looked like Konsa fucked his knee.

I’ll admit I didn’t watch any of the post-match coverage as we had people round. Going to keep banging the “we played the same system” drum as I think this is why people have been fooled into thinking that performance was better. People think we made changes and it’s becoming the emperor’s new clothes.

Here’s the average positions from yesterday:

And here’s the average positions vs Slovakia:

The 2 key differences are Kane inexplicably playing at defensive midfield, and Saka holding more width. Fundamentally, though, it’s the same system. Saka’s width enabled more 1v1s yesterday compared to previously but I don’t think the previous system had been set up for Saka to operate so centrally. I certainly wouldn’t say his position had changed from winger to wing-back.

We didn’t create a single chance for Kane and that’s a team failure. It’s been the same whenever Watkins or Toney play too.

I’d like to see Foden and Saka (in particular) shoot more when they’re in positions at the edge of the box. I’m convinced Saka wouldn’t have made the same shot for his goal if the game was 0-0.

As for the semis, Shaw to definitely start. I’d like to see Palmer start too and you probably need to fit Bellingham in CM ahead of Mainoo. Which is harsh because Mainoo has been good in all his appearances so far.
