55 years ago we kicked off the new season with a home game v Notts County in Jimmy Hills first full season as City manager, complete with the brand new Sky Blue kit, brand new forward line of Humphries, Barr, Bly, Whitehorse and Laverick curtosy of chairman Derrick Robins £30k gift. As an enthusiastic 10 year old I vividly remember walking upto the now much missed Highfield Road amazed at having to queue to get in, we had a gate of 22000 up from about 6/7000 We won 2-0 and off we went on the Jimmy Hill journey to the promised land of top division football. Do I get the same buzz this time, in a word no and expect the 6/7000 to be the norm if we're lucky for the opening fixture. Can't get as enthused this time round as I was as a starry eyed 10 year old, after years of failure, false dawns galore, ten years of the poisonous bullshitting sisu, and at the moment the continued stewardship of toxic Tim Fisher I don't expect a lot different performance wise to recent times, hope I'm wrong so I'll wait and see.

My youngest lad is now 7. He has been going to games for 3 years now. He has travelled thousands of miles to go to games. To him just going to a game is enough. He was even at a game where we were winning 2-0 just before full time and we still didn't win. We got drenched and were freezing cold. But he was still happy.

He finally saw us win for the first time last season.....at Wembley. Still the only time he has seen us win. But he doesn't care.

He is starry eyed. He doesn't care about failure. He just wants to watch us play.

I get what you're saying Astute, and you too MusicDating, but were not all 10 years old. How many 10 year olds do you see walking around with Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool tops on as opposed to City tops? Success breeds support. Coventry City fans have been starved of good quality football. I know the kids are our future, but I also don't want our kids growing up with no ambition and settling for mediocre football, when with the right backing in the Club they could be watching top flight football. I can in no way be called a "Glory Hunter" I've followed this Club from the dark past shit football days, to seeing the promotions to the First Division. I somehow don't see that happening with this shower in charge anytime soon.

Pretty sure any city fan knows we were in the Premier league.

Pointing out that kids are walking round wearing Man Utd / Liverpool / Chelsea tops now doesn't prove anything, as they were even when we were also in the Premier League and I was one of about 3 city fans in my whole class. That was during times of Huckerby, Dublin, Ndlovu etc.

We aren't in the Premier League now and there are still plenty of kids who get excited for CCFC week in, week out whether old men on the internet who have no idea say they aren't or not. I know as I see them week in, week out and see them nearly wet themselves with excitement at meeting the players.

We are a different matter.

But not the kids. When they have non uniform day he has to wear one of his Cov tops. They used to ask him things like Coventry who or why doesn't he have a top like them.....Man Utd or Liverpool. But it suddenly changed one weekend. He took the Friday and Monday off. On the Tuesday he was full of pride. He had seen his team win at Wembley. They don't take the piss anymore. Most haven't even been to see the team that they wear the top of.

Let the kids have fun going. For him it is daddy time. His 8 year old sister now wants to go. But she has mummy time when we go. They shouldn't know about the crap that goes on at our club. It should be about going to games and nothing else. He will have enough years of being depressed about how crap we are and cursing me for taking him when he was young when he is older.

Exactly, it always seems to be people who are older who have grown up kids who moan about things like this.

Not just meeting the players.

Just seeing them is enough. Like when the coach turns up at an away game.

Every time someone gets off I get the same question.

'Is that the GK?'
'No'

'Is that the GK?'
'No'

Is that the GK?'
'No. It is our manager'
'Did he used to be our GK?'

Completely echo your sentiments Astute. My youngest (6) is football mad and more importantly sky blue mad. Absolutely loves going to the watch us play, makes me go up early to watch the warm up. Wears his kit pretty much everyday after school and at weekends. Loves talking about the club and the players, asking questions about them, watching highlights on YouTube. First he idolised Maddison, now its George Thomas. He can't wait for the new kit. Hes very excited about the new season, and going up the Ricoh again. Looking at the fixtures at the minute all bar 2 home games on a Saturday, which is great for him.

I also take my nice and nephews who are also now cov mad.

Like you say its about dad and son time, etc. Things are shite at the minute, but I think we have a responsibility to not get kids bogged down with the politics of what's going on and just encourage and let them enjoy the football, good and bad.

That day with him at Wembley and seeing how mental he went when we scored and won will live with me forever. PUSB

That's the main point. Kids will enjoy it and be mad for it if they are allowed to be.

If a parent fills them with politics etc and puts a downer on everything and encourages them not to be bothered then they wont be bothered.

It's funny you should post this. I was driving up the M6 on Monday and stopped at Keele services at the same time as two coach loads of children on a school trip from Coventry.

Of the few of them wearing football tops, all were CCFC.

Well my 22 month old son told me he's NOPM yesterday and he just can't support the club like he used to back when he was 10 months old.

Also SBK, I see loads of kids in Cov tops these days. More than in my day. Don't you live in Wales? That might be why you're not seeing many Cov tops. Not having a go, I'm just trying to work out where you have got your anecdotal information from as I know you don't go to home games either.

The first City v Notts County game I remember as a kid was on a cold February night at Highfield Road in 1982. City lost 5-1. After Notts County scored their 4th some gallows humour kicked in and a chant of "we want 5" went up around most of the ground. County duly scored their fifth and we City fans jumped up, punching the air and shouting 'yessssss!'

I have a 10 year old daughter who comes to games (not all but some) including Wembley. She does enjoy it - mainly because she gets to eat crap! And absolutely loved Wembley.

The point is though after Wembley I think she's realised how shite Cov are - still likes coming but as we live in Leicester you can imagine the ridicule that she got after discussing the Wembley win with her mates at school! They didn't even know what the trophy was!

She's regularly says that it'll be great when we get back to the prem - here's hoping!

Yes I live in Wales, and I also have been back and forth to Coventry regularly this year, in fact once a month since last Christmas (Will be up in Coventry tomorrow) so I do see kids wearing different football shirts. I may have a bad ticker, but I'm not blind

Remember it well. We made Notts County look like Barcelona that night.
