Probably the same, social media is just a paradox. On one hand, it facilitates social connections and good for organising communities (sports teams). On the other, the algorithms are inherently abusive because they farm engagement so people get railroaded into certain narratives. A lot of social scientists have tracked the polarisation of US politics and the advent of social media.

Even looking at how some convos unfold on here, if people spoke like they did to one another on here as they did in real life, it would kick off. It’s because we’re sat behind screens and there’s no real consequences.

Bluesky is far far better in terms of your entire feed not being overrun with stuff that is a long way from your interests. I have zero news & politics on my twitter yet get inundated with right wing stuff.

My Bluesky is pretty much 100% news and politics and doesn't suffer from the same problem. Although that brings with it another problem unless you're happy being in an echo chamber.

One of the reasons I like off topic here, when it's not a shitshow, is that it's not an echo chamber.

Can’t lie but this has left me feeling really numb. It has properly taken me back and stopped me in my tracks.

I’ve followed Charlie Kirk for a number of years now. Don’t agree with everything he says but most of it I do.

One thing you could say about him was that he was always fair and always gave others the chance to voice their opinions. What some people don’t understand is that he got people on both sides of the spectrum talking and certainly wasn’t the bad guy.

A proper family man who advocated as such and my heart breaks for his children, particularly after seeing a video his little girl running up to him in the studio last week.

It’s a dark day for democracy and free speech but it’s good to see others that maybe don’t agree with anything he says being empathetic too. Albeit there are some absolute weapons who are celebrating.

Ironically, if this was committed by a left wing radical, all it will do is unite the right and awaken those that were on the fence. I expect there’ll be massive uproar in the USA over next few days.

100% it was someone trained. That shot hit his main artery. From the video I saw, looks like there were two shots that hit him in a similar area.

Grim.

Not everyone is aware enough to realise what these platforms are up to. We’ve all let ourselves dive into various rabbit holes on YouTube or whatever.

Even as @David O'Day mentioned earlier, even feeds that are dominated with sports/music can be fed radical stuff.

Thankfully, my brain rot app of choice is IG where I’m currently being spammed with College Football clips / posts because I’ve done a few google searches on coaches, teams, players and so on.

Reported where? I haven’t seen anywhere report saying it was a republican (not saying it isn’t true).

Why would a republican do that?

Because not all "republicans" think the same, some are pretty disgusted at people like Charlie Kirk who they see as far too right wing.

I honestly don't know how the world can be repaired. There are people on Twitter openly celebrating this.

I don't care what your political opinions are. If you are celebrating a young Dad being shot, simply for voicing his opinions and trying to encourage debate, I don't consider you to be human.

Its always important to try and find centre ground when debating with opponents, but I have no starting point with these people. If you celebrate this, I don't want to find centre ground with you.

I think we’ll need to wait for more info to be released to determine if he was the shooter. It looked like whoever did had military training of some kind.

Is he military trained?

For the Americans it is. For the UK it’s mostly centre left people who don’t like racism.

TBH it’s best features are the algorithm is basic so your mental health improves and it’s not run by a Nazi trying to rip apart the fabric of democracy because no one likes him online.

Removes inhibitions like alcohol. Like road rage too. Safe to call everyone a c**t in your metal box or from an anonymous cursor.

But at least alcohol doesn’t make its money from amplifying the absolute worst in people. Algorithmic infinite scroll feeds are probably the worst invention since cigarettes for human health. And because of bad UX we’ve built a system where the strongest signals are anger and disgust.

Would love to know what conversations Mandelson and Trump are having right now. Currently the position is that Mandelson feels very bad for writing a genuine message in a book Trump clams is fake isn’t it?

So it was an irrelevant post then?

Why did you dig something up on him and then call him polarising? Why did you do it?

"Adds context to the whole situation"

You are trying to justify it now. THERE IS NO CONTEXT. He was murdered for his opinions.

There is absolutely no context to find.

Watch what you post

I heard he drove a red car

The colour of his car is as relevant to this discussion as him being polarising.

He was murdered. It shouldn't matter in the slightest what his views are. Its not relevant

What the fuck are talking about.

You can find someone polarising and still think they shouldn't have been shot.

No one is justifying anything, now if you are just going to post nonsense like this can you please refrain from talking to me as I can't be bothered with nonsense like this.

No, its advice.

We all have a duty to not inflame situations.

Don't start trying to look for justifications as to why an innocent young Dad was murdered
