Fuck yeah, that hideous warmonger Zelenskyy, invading peace-loving Russia to try to install a puppet government.

What would you want if it was a country you cared about in Ukraine's situation, eh?

I'm not sure if you'd claim to be an actual patriot, I guess it would depend on what Trump told you, but let's imagine it was England and everything south of the M4 had been occupied by an authoritarian lunatic who said your country had no right to exist, whilst bombing the rest of it on a nightly basis.

Would you want your elected leader to sit and take it. To beg for peace on the aggressor's terms?

The comparison is absurd given that Ukraine has always been a powder keg given its history - especially Crimea - and the military overthrow of an elected president followed by sanctions against its Russian population. The US wanted this conflict and it got it. Trump is a maverick politician who has no filter or norms - he just opposes the prior strategy of a proxy war in Ukraine to wear down its perceived enemy.

By elected president I take it you mean the Russian puppet, one of the other ones before Trump.

He isn't interested in the war or strategy only what he can take from Ukraine and any other country he can pillage hence the hissy fit on telly when he was told the deal wasn't acceptable by Zelenskyy.

Which is what the US is all about. It only takes what it wants and always will and use Ukraine and others as pawns in its game.

This is just dumb. The war has been going on for years even when Trump isn’t there. Very Reddit brained meme.

When he was sworn in as president in May 2019 Zelensky promised to bring the war with Russian backed separatists that had been going on since 2014 to an end, that was his main election promise a goal that polls showed Ukrainians wanted more than anything.

He was unable to cut a deal because he held out for NATO membership and wasn't prepared to allow a high measure of independence in the regions of Ukraine, one might say he doesn't understand his true position.

Perhaps someone else should have a go at being the President of Ukraine?

As for tanks south of the M4, what a ludicrous analogy.

The point is obvious. ‘The US always acts in its own self interests’ so how is supporting the war for 3 years then suddenly flipping positions achieving that?

Grendel spent 3 years telling us the US was only in it because it's good for their economy then immediately pivoted overnight to saying Trump was withdrawing support to save billions of dollars.

As and when Trump makes good on his pledge to ‘take Gaza’ it’ll be interesting to see the mental gymnastics pulled to defend it.

Just throwing this out there as potential options, although appreciate they maybe a bit idealistic....
Option 1: Russia keep Crimea, Ukraine take back land invaded since 2022, but Ukraine becomes part of NATO.
Option 2: Ukraine takes back fully the 2014 territory and agree not to join NATO with Russian signing a peace treaty/agreement that if they invade Ukraine ever again, Ukraine will automatically be invited to join NATO. Peace treaty should be resigned by both Countries every 5 years so that if Putin is ousted or dies etc. his successor has to sign the agreement or Ukraine automatically joins NATO.
Option 3: Invite Russia to join NATO or EU, when Putin is no longer in power and they meet strict criteria. May offer a degree of security to the public/businesses there that could turn the tables on Putin.
Option 4: Make Crimea a temporarily independent country/state separate from Russia and Ukraine with their own free elections. Then in 15-20 years they can vote to decide whether to join Ukraine or Russia or stay as an independent country.
Option 5 - Simply draw a line under fighting with current land take. Most likely to store up massive future problems and Putin to try again when dust settles - and which leads to unstable solution and much more likely to lead to WW3.

Sadly option 5 is favoured by Trump/Vance/MAGAs but the other options should at least be discussed although there probably are other options too.

I can't believe people quote Orwell thinking he stood for what they believe...

The Orwell quotes right-wingers never mention

If you’ve ever expressed a political view to the left of Tony Blair, chances are you’ve been met with a response along the lines of: ‘Haven’t you ever read any Orwell?’ The irony of this statement is usually in how little Orwell that person has actually read.

There is also his overt homophobia describing Christopher Isherwood and his set as the nancy poets (I think that was comes from the Road to Wigan Pier, a publication funded by a socialist group if I remember correctly. I've read plenty of Orwell and he is a person brought up in a time when social attitudes were very different to today , it's not like I agree with all his of his stated philosophies and prejudices but I think those 2 are reasonably apposite.

It always was the case, there was no way Russia would pull out now. If a semi independent Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia was ever going to happen the time to have done it was in 2019. That's where most of the mineral wealth and industry is in Ukraine and also the largely Russian population live, clearly those facts were instrumental in Russia's behaviour but so was NATO's expansion eastwards, EU overtures to Ukraine.

Trump can't mine the minerals if the war is going on.
Stopping the war saves the US billions in arms shipments, and it can then remove the raw materials it wants from Ukraine while no doubt getting the contracts to rebuild the destroyed cities.

Trump is a business man.
Biden was a war monger

You can take your pick over which one you prefer.

So what would you get for the Ukrainians or what demands would you make of the Russians if they were to get those regions?
