If I were in what position?

My worry is this is a situation that gets worse and costs more lives until someone stands up to Putin. I suspect someone will have to get more involved at some point and it’s probably better that it’s sooner. As for end conditions Putin either needs to be given enough he can sell it as victory at home or you need to give him a bloody enough nose he goes back with his tail between his legs.

I think there's two people really laughing their socks off over all this.

Putin.

Xi.

It's been going on for years. A weakened and divided Europe with the UK out of the EU. Trump in America. And ongoing culture wars to distract and occupy people from it all. It's a bit late to actually be waking up to all of this now.

Yeah, it’s a shame so many still think Agent Farage is their mate. It’s not just him of course. Both China and Russia have hundreds of people cultivating their interests here and slowly dismantling the country while distracting everyone with arguments about gender neutral toilets and we just constantly play into their hands while the politicians setup their income streams for when they leave office.

Looks like it will have to be Europe.

If Europe is in chaos America will eventually get involved once it’s bad for business.

So many are triggered, it seems far more than the state visit of President Xi or Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia's visit, it's funny.

Very true.

And do get this sense there is an increasing isolationism emerging. Look after your own and concentrate on your own country etc.

It's funny that he can't do a direct tweet on this subject unlike his European counterparts yet finds plenty of time to tweet in support of his favourite genocidal state

That's a good question. Europe has to step up, and quickly.

A peace which rewards the aggressor won't be a lasting peace, we've seen that in Europe and specifically with Putin before.

So now it's about giving Ukraine the ability to dig in and defend itself until Russia realises it's an unwinnable war, even given Trump's about face.

Keep the economic squeeze on Russia and tighten it more if possible.

Over the next few years, use seized Russian assets and if necessary war bonds to fund the purchase of U.S. weapons to give to Ukraine, assuming that direct U.S. support is no longer available.

In the meantime, ramp up and rationalise European military capability so that when the time comes, Europe can be the realistic guarantor of any future peace deal, assuming that America is still in its pro-Putin isolationist phase.

What other choice is there?

Beyond Appeasement: What is Feasible for Ukraine

Accepting Russian conditions is not justified by the current situation in Ukraine. Instead, sustained Western assistance to Kyiv has strong prospects of securing a stalemate that protects European security and advances Ukraine’s goal of joining the European Union.

Im not sure that’s the case across the population of the EU. I’d imagine it’s pretty evenly split.

And when Ukraine run out of fighting aged men?

This is completely unrealistic and buys straight into the US strategy to keep Russia engaged in war whilst it hoovers up the new markets created from it.

How do you think things play out then? They take the whole of Ukraine and everyone hopes they don’t go further later?

We had lasting peace in Europe by rewarding Stalin and letting him take the eastern states. It preserved peace for decades

The notion a EU in financial and economic strife with huge US tariffs looming is going to replace US funding for this conflict is for the birds.

Historical precedent of the last several years. Putin wanting to claim back as much of the historic territory as he can. Russian birth rate in decline and being desperate for bodies.

How do you think it will play out?

There is zero evidence to suggest any other countries will be targeted. He hasn’t the resource and China pulls his strings ultimately.
