I respect Zelensky for standing up for himself. Ultimately, if he doesn’t like a deal, he doesn’t have to accept the terms and continue to fight on without US support.

The reality is, there is no defined victory conditions, or plan to force the Russians out. The war in its current state relies is frozen and is at a stalemate. Russia has formally annexed the regions it currently occupies so will not give territory up without being forced out. Ukraine’s plan is to continue the war until the Putin regime collapses, presumably.

I'm not entirely sure what all the side arguments are about so cant get involved.

The side arguments are a bunch of weirdos who have an issue with Starmer being diplomatic with Trump and then threw their toys out the pram when it was pointed out they worship a bloke who calls Hamas his friends.

But yes you are right, their behaviour in that 'meeting' was appalling. And their pettiness and spite means they will fuck Ukraine over for this.

I don't think either come out of it very well, but one is the leader of a country fighting for its survival.

Was absolutely incredible to watch.

It's repulsive - presumably it repulses Starmer as well. But if the alternative is having the UK get humiliated on international TV and throwing months of diplomacy out the window because JD Vance fancies an IRL Twitter beef, then is that a better outcome for the country? And that's a genuine question btw.

Fair play to Zelensky standing up for his country and himself. I reckon he knew they were going to shaft him before going. Like a couple of dodgy second hand car salesmen.
Trump got the arse because he turned him down.

What actual material concessions were gained apart from just some subtle changes in tone? The way they've just treated Zelensky hardly shows a material change of attitude, does it?

The avenues to at least some of Starmer's desired outcomes are still open thanks to his genuflecting. The avenues to Zelensky's now appear very much closed.

Zelensky's willingness to stand up for himself and his country in the face of a bully is admirable. It's also proved to be completely futile and has clearly damaged his country's diplomatic fortunes. I genuinely don't know which holds most value in this Trump era.

That’s the thing, you can disagree with the ways and means of it… what is a viable alternative to the Trump/Vance view of the situation?

Does Ukraine have the resources to oust Russia? No.

Does the west have the political will to intervene on Ukraine’s behalf to oust Russia? Also, no.

There’s not even a plan or defined victory conditions so the expectation atm is to just fund the status quo until the Russian regime collapses, presumably.

It also displayed why Zelensky is considered a difficult man to work with by multiple world leaders, including the last US president.

Fuck. Right. Off.

"I don't want advantage." Coming from someone who's trying to get access to Ukraine's minerals cos an invaded country is desperate.

So Ukraine's options seem to be get killed by Russia or fucked by the US.

We really need Trump's body to step up to the plate. A blood vessel in the brain. A blocked artery. A burst appendix. Maybe his own major intestine, in a desperate bid to save humanity, could leap straight up through his neck and throttle his brain. But then we'd be left with Vance...

Stop the world, I want to get off.
