I do have to wonder what it is that Starmer's done to persuade Trump to praise him in public multiple times now. Without knowing what it is, I'm genuinely impressed!

Quite a few of the threads I've seen on Reddit about the Canada situation (on Canadian groups) seem to have been the opposite reaction, with the majority really pushing for boycotting American products, and just general support for the Canadian government's response even if both countries will probably lose out overall.

The actual reality of opinion is I'd imagine somewhere inbetween, but can't help but feel the US is increasingly in danger of isolating itself, especially from its direct neighbours

Yeah. A splintered internet isn’t good. Everyone’s too aggressive and too fragile around differing opinions. That’s why I love SBT Off Topic:

The talk of it in relation to Mexico is very much not premature. The designation of cartels as terrorist organisations was the first step towards conducting military operations there.

On the canal, Trump has often said he wants to take it back. The question is by what means.

The Mexican invasion is delayed…for now anyway ! I don’t necessarily like the way Trump goes about things but most of the time he just wants people to come to the table and do a deal….Mexico have sent 10k troops to the border.

Its all blackmail but other countries exist and have internal politics and no government with any sense of self preservation wants to look like a vassal state.

It was the right call but then the question will be why did it take tariff threats from trump to better secure their border

Most ‘illegals’ do so by overstaying visas, not by trying to sneak across the border. Disappointing to see you acting as a Trump apologist in any case.

Im not acting as an apologist. I’ve said I don’t like his methods but the fact is Mexico have responded by putting troops on the border and Panama has said they won’t renew their agreement with China regarding the Panama canal. Both are potential security issues for the U.S. He’s getting what he wanted whether we agree with the methods or not.

I don’t quite get what he really wants from Canada and said earlier that it’s no way to treat a close ally

Trump’s tariffs are already bearing fruit

The US president seems to be using the tariffs for coercive rather than revenue-raising purposes

It's not all one sided thought. Mexico's president has quite rightly flagged that if the US is so concerned about Mexican drug gangs they should look at where a decent percentage of the guns used by those gangs originate from. That will definitely be a large part of the discussions over the coming weeks.

As I understand it part of the strategy is to encourage investment in US manufacturing to bring it back from China and reduce the huge deficit the US has. He's also talked about replacing income tax with tariffs. He is definitely taking a bold a gamble because it is disrupting the way things have evolved over the last 25 or 30, even 100 years.

Time will tell.

The Biden administration hit Americans with personal inflation on food, petrol, cars and travel, income fell relative to the price of everything, that's his legacy.

Think someone called it earlier in the thread. Fuck all changes yet Trump will announce it as a big victory.

Its like here when the government announces something and when you scratch beneath the surface you find its the same thing thats been announced multiple times in the past.

Some sort of trade war in progress.

List of products from the United States subject to 25 per cent tariffs effective February 4, 2025 - Canada.ca

Effective February 4, 2025, the government is imposing 25 per cent tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the United States (U.S.).

In a statement on X, Canada's PM Justin Trudeau mentioned the outline of a new border security plan - much of which had already been announced in December.

That C$1.3bn (£724m) plan included efforts to disrupt the fentanyl trade, new tools for law enforcement, enhanced coordination with US law enforcement, increased information sharing and limiting traffic at the border.

There was also a deployment of drones and Black Hawk helicopters for surveillance.

and there it is, the worst part is you know there will be a huge chunk of Trump supporters who will conveniently ignore the facts and declare it a victory

According to Radio 4 this morning it seems there is a good chance this is a re-announcement of a deal made with Biden for Mexico to send 10K troops to the border.

His whole thing seems to be relying on his supporters having not been paying attention under Biden and reannouncing Bidens policies as his own. And to be fair to him it’s working a treat.

Trump does at least understand that being seen to be doing conspicuous leadership stuff is often just as (if not more) important to the average voter as what that stuff actually is.

And yet I think comparatively few people could tell you what the CHIPS Act is and how Biden got it passed.
