I did nearly say self appointed, but seemingly accepted and approved by members so de facto.

When ecclesiastical matters or questions arise, he always gives a considered response, even where the issue

If I saw a role advertised saying that certain minorities would be prioritised due to under representation at the level of the role advertised, I wouldn’t waste my time doing the necessary preparation and therefore not submit an application.

Many employers don’t give feedback to unsuccessful candidates these days. I suppose it could be risky to say it’s because you are white, straight, able bodied and with no mental health issues.

Like Grendel he’s fuckin mad
No compassion or empathy but blaming air traffic control individuals who weren’t competent because they were employed because they were disabled or black
Just like grendel he thinks he’s on a winner so repeats the point

And on child abuse victims grendel I have on numerous occasions called on justin welby on inaction and unlike you been involved in having to deal with the consequences of these very close to home

We can either piss in the wind or get our hands dirty and try and be part of the solution

Like trump you just repeat the same shit so fuck off

I don’t really subscribe to the whole ‘anti-DEI’ stuff but I tend to agree on the positive discrimination points. FWIW I’ve thought (and maybe this is just benevolent, non-racist me) that things like diversity ‘quotas’ would sort themselves out over time anyway as I think it’s largely dependent on the prevailing culture that one has grown up around. Those now aged 60-70 have generally lived through times of overt racism and may have a higher tendency to deprive POC of opportunity*. However, I think generally speaking those 50 and below, which is probably the more common senior management age now, have a different worldview and I question whether the positive discrimination or DEI reporting is necessary.

*I will qualify this by saying not all people of this age and above are racist, but there is likely a larger proportion who are either overtly or subconsciously due to their surroundings growing up.

I think it should also include women, who are still underrepresented overall, IMO.

I’ve got some sympathy. But then I look at my team which had two what you would probably call diversity hires: women who moved into tech through a program called Code First Girls. One is by far the most impressive person I’ve ever worked with, the other is a bit crap but no worse than your average crap developer.

Think there's a lot more to this than we're being told, isn't there always. Might look into it more when I have more time as it's pretty interesting stuff and certainly not as straightforward as Trump is making it seem.

Also seen it suggested by the outgoing secretary of transportation that upon taking office Trump immediately fired or suspedened key personal with no replacements. While I would doubt that would directly result in this tragedy it does give the impression he's just doing whatever he feels like with no real assessment of the consequences.

As always seems the way nowadays its hard to work out whether what you're reading that is being presented as fact is actually true and can in any way be backed up rather than some outlandish claim from either side of the political spectrum.

Too many appointments a result of political largesse in the USA.

Here it tends to be people who don't rock the boat.

I have neither the time or the will to go down too many rabbit holes, good luck in your quest but prepare to encounter vast tracts of obsfucation.

Do you believe women need equal representation in the workplace, why is that, could you set out your reasons.

I believe the best person should have the job. Women are often underrepresented in managerial and director positions.

Surely it’s on you to explain why they don’t? The null hypothesis has to be all humans are equal until proven otherwise no?

Well summarise them, with examples and links.

Also can you find out if there is equality of representation in the most successful economies, China for example.

Is re starting a break when a manager speaks to you 5 minutes before the end of it a lowering of safety standards?

Do people with intellectual disabilities all have a handful of G.C.S.Es?

ATC is a stressful job. Are people with a handful of G.CSEs and mental health issues the best candidates?
Assume the break thing refers to railway staff. Did a bit of digging and guess what? Turns out it's most likely bollocks. The source seems to trace back to The Sun and then got repeated by the likes of the Mail and Express.

While looking into it ended up on a forum similar to this for railway staff. There's a very long thread from when this first came out of rail staff asking if anyone had ever heard of this being a thing, let alone a thing that is actually implemented, and nobody had. Now maybe there is a TOC somewhere that it applies to, who knows, but nobody on that forum of people in the industry could find any evidence of it actually happening.

No idea about the GCSE pass rate of people classed as having disabilities tbh.

As for who is the best candidate for ATC jobs I would suggest it's a very specific task that doesn't particularly correlate to any particular qualification. So I would say requiring people to have a base standard of educational attainment and then putting them through position specific tests and training is probably the most appropriate.

Well this basically shows Trump to be talking a load of shit (surprise surprise).

- an initiative to increase diversity in the FAA and train disabled people to be air traffic controllers was introduced during his first term
- candidates aren't just given a job for being black or disabled, they still have to go through the same selection process and training

Fact-checking Trump's claims about diversity schemes and the Washington plane crash

He told a news conference that diversity hiring efforts at the Federal Aviation Administration may have led to safety issues.

Having ended up on a rail workers forum looking for info on something malc raised on another thread I thought there must be a forum for ATC workers, and of course there is. The opinion on there is that Trump is talking absolute shit.

The issue with the biographical questionnaire was much less that it existed, these things have been around for decades and I've had to take similar tests for jobs here, and more that someone who had access to it decided to give the answers to minority candidates. I don't think anyone would disagree that cheating a test designed to weed out people who are not suitable for a role involving peoples safety is a bad idea to say the least.

The problem seems to simply be lack of staff which seems to have two main causes. 1) ATC staff are in demand and can get paid far more working for private companies and 2) lack of training capacity, ex ATC staff aren't interested in training the next generation therefore there's a limited number of training places per year.

There are programs to encouraged under represented groups into the industry but the recurring comment seems to be this is in addition rather than as a replacement for whoever Trumps ideal ATC is. In fact its so rare that someone disabled successfully treats the program its accompanied by fanfare and a press release, there seems to have been three people to date.

And of course it gets pointed out that the FAA have many jobs that aren't ATC and don't directly impact safety.

I don't suppose you noticed I have not expressed a position either way I just asked a provocative question and asked for justification of currently popular point of view and the only response any can come up with is 'studies prove this point', maybe they do I've certainly seen this expressed in the media but I've never looked at any details and I suspect neither has the poster who gave that response. I think that you are simply repeating whatever is currently being promoted in the media.

Despite this I think you've decided in your own mind what and how I think and before you ask I'm going to say I don't know because it's not something I've given any consideration to.

I try to remind myself I’m being fed one side of it by design on Twitter. But the lack of backlash from Americans to him standing up hours after such a tragedy and coming out with that tirade is frightening.

Presumably his tariff antics will somehow result in our energy bills, council tax, groceries and mortgage rates going up again. Or will at least be quoted alongside the usual world events as a reason, whilst the profit margins stay same.

What is he actually trying to achieve? Read several reports today and nobody seems to know because every expert and trade group, both US based and overseas, seem pretty unanimous in saying this is a terrible idea that will disadvantage everyone.

I have a feeling he’ll claim some non existent victory then remove them. Like “see Canada has promised to stop sending fentanyl over because of my tariffs”
