I think the point is Pete, decisions about things like lump sums can almost immediately turn about to be the wrong ones due to ensuing events.

I haven't got £268K in my pension in total let alone enough in there to be able to take £268K out of it!

This is nuts, why on earth would you pardon someone like this?

Trump pardons Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht

Trump said he had called Ulbricht's mother to let her know he had granted her son a full pardon.
www.bbc.co.uk
US President Donald Trump says he has signed a full and unconditional pardon for Ross Ulbricht, who operated Silk Road, the dark web marketplace where illegal drugs were sold.

Ulbricht was convicted in 2015 in New York in a narcotics and money laundering conspiracy and sentenced to life in prison.

Silk Road, which was shut down in 2013 after police arrested Ulbricht, sold illegal drugs using Bitcoin, as well as hacking equipment and stolen passports.

Ulbricht was found guilty of charges including conspiracy to commit drug trafficking, money laundering and computer hacking.

During his trial, prosecutors said Ulbricht's website, hosted on the hidden "dark web", sold more than $200m (£131m) worth of drugs anonymously.

Prosecutors said he also solicited six murders-for-hire, including one against a former Silk Road employee, though they said no evidence existed that any killings were actually carried out.

Yep I’m extremely lucky to be in this position - I was utterly shocked and I’m sorry if it came across as showing off it wasn’t what I meant

I would take it - the age is being extended and the government will probably extend again and there is a suspicion they will reduce the tax free threshold. I had £240k and I have taken it all

The other thing of course this government has done is stop discretionary trusts in pension and applied IHT to the value. This would effectively mean your children are likely to be taxed at 90% on it when they come to benefit.

Im being realistic. If it’s not in the manifesto it’s not a promise. Starmer was wrong to make it sound like he thought it was an injustice but maybe he’s going off what he was told by campaign groups and not the facts, the fact is he didn’t promise compo for them so didn’t break a promise by not giving it.

The country is on its arse and a large part of that is the last 20 years politicians have given in to every demand from pensioners as a group. I probably do know better off pensioners but that’s the point, they don’t need free cash. I have sympathy for those that are just above a cut off as I do for working age people just above a benefits cut off but that’s life, there’s always someone just above any cut off.

How many years reduction I guess depends on whether there is an annual inflation linked increase.

Stop the annual £10 Christmas bonus. What a waste of time and money.

Tax Amazon and the like until the pips squeak.

Stop jetting off around the world whilst at the same time extolling the virtues of WFH.

So less than 20 years then. Also would need to take in to account what you have done with the money. Invest and become a capitalist or squander it.

And labelling the people that convicted him as 'scum' is quite something.

Interesting. Trump will probably give him a role in government the way it's going...
I've listened to a few podcasts about the Silk Road and Ross Ulbricht doesn't sound like someone Trump would really want released, but there have been a lot of campaigns to get his sentence reduced (as it was seen as overly harsh and mainly a message to others thinking of doing similar), so maybe he's trying to make an ally?

No, not such a specific group as state prosecutors. It was limited to Tories, wasn‘t it?

Hence my use of the word “ similar“ and not the word “ same”.

This is for the politics thread rather than the Trump thread, but I think describing some homophobic, racist and misogynistic people as homophobic, racist and misogynistic is a little different to describing state prosecutors as scum for locking away a criminal.

It’s a worldwide market right?

Do Google pay a fair amount of UK tax for their UK advertising operations? Is Ireland used as a tax haven?

Once you answer those two very simple questions you will be on the path to logical thinking.

Be better.

The answers are ‘probably not’ and ‘yes’ respectively. Trump’s plan to address the latter is to cut corporate taxes in the United States accordingly, which would be a huge boon to Google.

Be best!
