Its not exactly abject failure by the Democrats, it’s currently 71 million to 66 million votes. Like many Nations the country is loosely split down the middle. The polsters have been made to look like cunts again though.
I can sort of see why many Americans voted for him but as a Brit I’m very concerned as to some of his isolationist ideas.

It’s only the second time a Republican has won the popular vote this century, and in fact only the second time since 1988. So it is pretty significant.

On top of that, Harris benefitted from much more favourable coverage on mainstream media which makes this result even more telling for the Democrats.

You could counter that with Trump having the backing Rogan etc. Think this is a bit of a misconception and leans into the fallacy that it’s some kind of normal man against the elites. There is a huge amount of money behind Trump, institutions favoured the dems though.

From Sky news;

“The president-elect has made no secret of his frustration at how the US has for decades bankrolled the security blanket that protects Europe.”

This is one I don’t get. The motivation here was that the US have markets to trade with and to stop large scale conflict disrupting the global economy. Will be interesting to see if the charitable interpretation (that he’s bluffing to get Europe to increase spending to deter Putin) is correct or he really is just erratic and isolationist.

Trump going into meetings with Putin without staff and the mobilisation of Russian bots in favour of Trump makes the charitable interpretation hard to believe.

I mean I agree with aspects of what he’s saying but it doesn’t really clear anything up. I’ll respond to the key points

1. Yes people voted based on the economy, that seems clear, but I don’t think Trump is going to have the answers there and the dems aren’t at fault for post Covid inflation - that was a global issue.

2. The average person feels they’ve been called a nazi etc - people call out Trump supporters as racist when they do racist things. I don’t see how that upsets those on the fence and causes them to side with Trump.

3. The media said such and such a thing might favour Harris, ok, so what? They’ve got talking heads filling 24 news cycles. They are going to speculate. It makes sense women might vote for Harris based on abortion rights, I don’t see why speculating on that upsets people and cause them to vote for Trump? The right wing media all said Trump would win, he had support of Rogan, the world’s biggest podcaster. Are they not part of the political information complex?
He says the story wasn’t true but Trump was ahead in the polls?

I did have a 4 which fell of the post which was we need to learn to talk to the other side. Yeah absolutely but people have been trying to have evidenced based discussions all morning and constantly told it’s sneering and talking down to people. The Democrats outspent the Republicans 3 to 1 this election. Google and Microsoft were their biggest donors. Both platforms were caught red handed suppressing

1) On election day, you could google locations to vote for Kamala but not Trump that Google had to patch

2) YouTube had a “technical issue” where the Trump - JRE podcast couldn’t be found in full using the search bar

3) ChatGPT would refuse to ‘make a case’ to vote for Trump but would do so for Harris

The mainstream media and big tech were firmly on Harris’ side and bit motivator for Trump voters was the issue of free speech and big tech is/was a threat in suppressing certain viewpoints. For example, in 2020 Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets censored information on the Hunter Biden laptop because of claims it was “Russian disinformation”. A classic political corruption case that was censored and given how close that election was (80k votes) you can see why the right were aggrieved of this. This isn’t even a hoax because Mark Zuckerberg is on record admitting it. Even in this election, you had ‘respectable’ news outlets deliberately misrepresenting what Trump said, for example, that he wanted to execute Liz Cheney.

If Trump lost every age demographic outside of the 45-64 group, how did he win the popular vote? Is it just a case of the 45-64 group being a much larger voting base?

Easily 400 electoral votes, probably more. Biden was even likely to lose places like New Jersey at the time he dropped out.

There’s been loads of these big tech glitches supposedly being suppression but every one I looked into in the past have been manipulation to create the narrative that big tech was suppressing the republicans. For example, feeding chatGPT prompts it remembers to get it to output something specific later.

I don’t know if that’s the case here as haven’t seen the stories but just a note of caution.

Also, Musk is suppressing things more on twitter now than the old board ever did.

Just a thought from me, and I don't believe all this chat about uneducated people not knowing what they are really voting for.
We had it for Brexit and to me it's all to do with soundbites, 'TAKE BACK CONTROL' there was never really much substance behind it, but people bought into it
Now we have Trump 'MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN' and that's what I believe a majority of Americans have bought in to, again I don't think the substance behind it was really there.
We will all need to wait and see what MAGA actually turns into for the US citizens

When exactly was America great ? What period in time?
Imagine if we had a party campaigning along the lines of make Britain great again…at least I would roughly guess that meant from about 1750 to 1945 ish
( And even then , it wasn't that great for the majority of the population)

Exactly. There’s such a massive part of “the other side” that don’t want to hear any empirical evidence or facts at all that cast into doubt the motivating points behind their positions.

And it’s like whack a mole…when you or the less extreme party’s representatives engage in conversation about a specific issue and try to have evidence based conversations, Trump is already talking about Haitians eating dogs or Boris is talking about £350million a week to the EU.

Are either of them true? No not at all. Does that matter? Not at all, because those voters don’t want facts they want soundbites to support their narrative which honestly today is just usually “i don’t want people that don’t look like me here”.
