He would still has to win a 3rd term so even if he did remove the term limits, so what?

That would open the door for Obama to make a comeback and compete at the next election. Trump will be 82 in 2028, he is unlikely to run again so the idea he’d remove term limits isn’t likely.

Was a Starmer type enough maybe? I'm thinking Starmer but with a bit more humour and slightly cringey American charm.

It can’t be difficult to find someone with more charm and humour than Starmer. Or to find one who sticks to a set of principles as well. Even in the USA!

They tend to be quite socially conservative too on issues such as abortion.

The exit polls suggest a high turnout of the women’s vote and that did not translate into votes for Harris. Considering her central policy focus was on women’s reproductive rights, is a big failure.

She made the exact same mistake as Hilary Clinton did in 2016, hedging their bets on the women’s vote, specifically the unmarried women’s vote (married women favoured Trump).

You'd think people would consider it 'woke nonsense' saying nothing positive can come from telling people what they are. Aren't they always "say it how it is" and "call a spade a spade"? If someone tries to shove their fingers in a plug socket they're stupid. They probably wouldn't like hearing they're stupid, but they are whether they like it or not.

Oh, and nobody likes calling people stupid more than Donald Trump. It's one of his go-to attack strategies.

If you look at Trump's words, actions and deeds and then still vote for him, you are an idiot. I shall call them such and have no qualms about it.

Apparently one of the two biggest issues was democracy. Then they've voted in the candidate who has talked and acted like a fascist dictator and incited an insurrection to try and stop democracy. Those are the actions of idiots.

Also the people who hate snowflakes but upset an academic on twitter can’t understand their reasoning.

The whole argument just comes across as so fragile, insecure and resentful I just can’t understand it. No wonder populism is making a come back.

Last time I felt like it would be a shitshow, but a funny one because he was absolutely clueless. He thought he could actually be Presidential. That's pretty much how it turned out.

This time, he's not going to for that. He's just going to be Trump. He's going to be vindictive and do what he can to keep himself in power. He will fill positions with those who will do as he say no questions asked. Plus everything else from the courts to the Senate are stacked in his favour and he's been told he's above the law.

I fully expect him to try and get those who have opposed and criticised him arrested at some point in the future and I also expect at some point he will try and make a case that he should be allowed to stand again after his second term is up, and he will fight anyone who tries to stop him, because once it's over there's nothing to stop these court cases rearing their heads again. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts an inquiry into 2020 and suddenly all the bullshit he spoke about was 'true'. And my worry is people will allow him to get away with it.

And that's before considering Ukraine, Israel, NATO etc.

I don't think you realise just how dangerous this result may be.

God Help America.

That’s award because Trump has record the highest vote share of Jewish and Latino voters a republican candidate has ever recorded. In fact, the governor’s house in Peurto Rico flipped to Trump.

Arab American voters are backing Trump in Michigan which has helped swing the state. Likewise, the Harris has seen a decrease in support with African American voters.

The data just does not support your viewpoint. Compared to say, Romney and McCain, Trump has mobilised significant support amongst ethnic minorities.

I don’t think it’s a shock no the consensus was it was neck and neck but the margin of error could cause an easy win either way. Probably Trump has done slightly better than expected but then the polls had him leading nearly every swing state yesterday.

Thst said he was trailing considerably until the last few weeks.

I never said she did. It’s undeniable that the abortion issue was key to her campaign, something CNN highlighted when their exit poll came out - ‘state of democracy’ and ‘women’s rights’ being key concerns favouring Harris… Before the polls came in.

She clearly had bad advice from people like J Anne Seltzer who believed the Dems were up 4% in places like Iowa. Which she believed was driven by the outrage on the reversal of Roe v Wade amongst women. Don’t believe me? Watch/read the pollster who came to this conclusion herself. On that note, the Dems believed they had a shot of swinging Kansas which was as ridiculous as those republicans believing they could swing NY and/or NJ.

Her campaign neglected a key demographic that backed Joe Biden. White working class men (specifically in the Rust Belt), the economy and jobs were a key in the election and as voters were not happy with the Biden admin on the economy. She did not have a policy programme that differentiated herself from Biden - in fact she said she’d have changed nothing when inflation was significant.

The Selzer poll has historically been a gold standard in state polling for Iowa. For it to have been so dramatically wrong is just bizarre.

But abortion being a plus for Harris is a consequence of what Trump did. Not that it matters, he ran an awful campaign and won big.

Are there people in the real world who say "don't speak to me ever again if you voted for X?" or is it just an online attention seeking thing?

Random "celebs" on social media saying "unfollow us if you voted Trump"

Nothing weirder than people who's whole personality is politics.

Seltzer’s poll was an outlier and most polls had Trump winning it. She was out by 14% so clearly her methodologies and/or samples were flawed.

Clearly Trump ran a much better campaign than Harris because he’s outperformed the polls with an apparently all time unpopular VP candidate. On top of that, Harris benefitted from much more favourable coverage on mainstream media which makes this result even more telling for the Democrats.

It’s clear that you just don’t understand why people would vote for Trump. Then again, with all due respect, British liberals just don’t really get US elections.

Its not exactly abject failure by the Democrats, it’s currently 71 million to 66 million votes. Like many Nations the country is loosely split down the middle. The polsters have been made to look like cunts again though.
I can sort of see why many Americans voted for him but as a Brit I’m very concerned as to some of his isolationist ideas.
