I think there's definitely a case for banning public ownership of handguns at least.
(I know this debate has been done to death over the years in the USA)

There's always an argument to keep hunting rifles, but I can't see any argument for needing a hand gun that can be easily smuggled into a major public event or school etc.

I'm of the understanding that ALL modern type handguns are banned here in the UK.
And getting g caught in possession of one is an Imediate 5 year prison stay.

If this shooting doesn't focus the next President's mind on the issue then nothing will.

As I said, its a very old debate, but ive always thought that an assassination of a president is the only thing even likely to bring about any kind of change.

I think it's one of the few issue on here where there's pretty much consensus with most in agreement there should be tighter gun controls in the US but the people of the US don't seem to agree!
If regular mass shootings in school don't change their minds I'm not sure the attempted assassination of an ex and potential future president will though it would be good if it did.

With people in the crowd spotting the shooter before it all happened I could see it leaning the other way towards 'more good guys with guns could have stopped it'

And worryingly, how the security of the state will be organised post election.

It will be used to justify some of the policies they had planned anyway. No chance anything sensible like gun control comes from it

I've just seen the footage. I can't believe how calmly everyone sits there. At that point you don't know if it's one idiot or a group will be firing into the crowds, but everyone sits back down or gets their camera out, nobody tries to run away. I'd have got out of there as quick as I could.

Possibly why some reports initially said it was fireworks?

I see we are at Stage 4 TDS, that did not take long.

Anyway here is a fairly good breakdown of the incident by Ryan McBeth.

Initial thoughts about the Attempted Assassination on President Trump

Not a chance YouTube will let me talk about this
open.substack.com

So my Hunting Rifle is chambered in .308, what the shooter was using has not been mentioned. And I sight in for 200yds, there is very little drop at that range for the weight I use, well any in .308. I remember a chance I had at nearer 400 yds, I paced it out later, and I would have missed by a long way as I had not thought of shooting at that range and would have not aimed correctly, just as well I let it go.

But of course there are other factors, I have never heard of Elk shooting back and he must have known this was a one way trip.

This was a relatively simple shot, well within an average shooters capability on a range, more complicated if you were going for a head shot. Quite how the fact you would be dead within a few seconds of pulling the trigger factors in I have no idea.

The strangest thing for me is that after he nearly gets shot in the head they pick him up and let him stand there in the open... right in the spot where he just nearly got shot in the head.

And no, I'm not suggesting it was fake before anyone says so.

They’d have been the ones getting shot though. They probably didn’t appreciate his “fight, fight, fight” stuff though.

How do you identify an unknown individual using DNA unless they already have a criminal record?

I'm no expert on this, but I think the fact that you're probably about to die would impact most untrained shooter's fine motor control. And probably a lot of well-trained ones too.

Anyway, AR-15, the reports are saying. I'm guessing he didn't have the Republican approved bump stock fitted, or it might have been an awful lot worse.

At these rallies why do they seat a bank of audience behind the rostrum.? . all they can see is the back of the candidate
Is it to try and put off a potential sniper who, as in this case, runs the risk of shooting a member of the public .

I have a friend whose son is in the US military - says it was definitely an inside job. There is no way the Secret Service would have let an unsub get into that position, especially when people in the crowd were telling local law enforcement that they could see him crawling onto the roof 5 minutes before.
Definite echoes of the grassy knoll and Lee Harvey Oswald.

All rational people including this poster, denounce CH riots and the Trump assassination attempt. You are perpetually dumb/dim as fcuk and for some reason consistently wet the bed whenever some on here criticises the actions of US republicans.

This is absolutely because of Trump’s own behavior cultivating exactly what he wanted to cultivate but this time it was aimed at him. He’s a rapist, felon, and traitorous insurrectionist. He’s a leader of stochastic terrorism and has been playing “I’m not touching you” games to elicit responses. The assassin is to blame for the death and damage, and Trump is to blame for creating the political and social climate for violence. Calling for violence for protesters/rally disrupters, extrajudicial executions, other forms of “let’s hurt them” type of attitude. I’ve been expecting this to happen for a long time and am not at all surprised by these events. Anyone who has been paying attention shouldn’t be surprised by this tragedy. Trump isn’t just a victim, he’s complicit in his own injuries and the death and damage of the other victims. Fuck Trump. I hope he never gets assassinated so he experiences the horrors of deteriorating from his obesity, overall poor health, and drug abuse. I hope he lives another 20 miserable, decrepit years. The extremism of the right is on display with dangerous individuals making threats on air by saying “the revolution will remain bloodless as long as the left allows it to be.” They are literally playing the “I’m not touching you” game to elicit responses to then point to as justification for their immoral desires and as twisted vindication for propane they’ve been pushing.
I will never implicitly trust a democrat, but I know will always actively distrust a republican. They’re self serving, stupid, and/or morally incompetent. Any altruism from the right is transactional and conditional. The right is much more homogenous than the left and so it’s much easier to lob simplistic statements and risk making generalizations. Now, though, the majority of republicans have behaved in a way that I can safely designated Republicans as default bad-faith participants in any discussion or debate until proven otherwise. It’s no longer fallacious to generalize the party and its supporters in this way.

That was my thought, well it certainly would impact me, those who are about to die salute you.

AR 15 type, I have not seen any mention in what it was chambered in, and using a .223 would seem likely but an odd choice.

Bump stock, well then you would spray and praying, not something that would be a good idea in this sort of case.

This is what happens when expecting news outlets to react instantly, whilst also expecting them to be impartial and not to jump to conclusions until verified.
