Funny, as someone who stands out in my memories watching City as a youngster, I didn't realise that he was with the club for such short span of time

Sad news. A classic centre forward who headed the ball like a rocket. The only other player I ever saw do that was Neil Martin and of course his son! RIP

Great guy off the pitch - whilst at CCFC and living temporarily locally used to regularly patronise the Coventry City Supporters Club then in Thackhall street and played a mean game of snooker 47+breaks etc

Very nomadic career but always delivered wherever he went - RIP big Tony

Was playing for us at about the time I started to get interested.

As many have remarked, a great header of the ball.

Liverpool FC are mourning the loss of former player Tony Hateley who died this morning aged 72.
The former centre-forward who plundered 27 goals for the Reds in 1967/68 campaign, his only season at the club, passed away in Preston after a long illness.
Bill Shankly broke the club's transfer record to take Derby-born Hateley to Anfield from Chelsea for £96,000 but despite his impressive goalscoring record at the Reds he moved on to Coventry City just a year later.
Despite his fleeting stay on Merseyside, Hateley remained an active member of the Liverpool Former Players Association in his retirement and was a popular figure around Anfield.
His son Mark was also a striker and went on to play for England while his grandson Tom played for Tranmere earlier this season.

Watched him in a 3-0 win at Stoke when he scored two thunderbolt headers from outside the penalty area with the great Gordon Banks in the Stoke goal.

As a kid I used to collect a series called 'Soccer Stars', which was basically pictures of all the players from every first division club. You then stuck them in an album. Tony Hateley was the first Sky Blue player I got. The excitement was fantastic!!!

I lost the album many years ago, but can still see the face of Tony Hateley from the collection!!

Many references to his heading ability and the power he generated ,IIRC It left him with a degenerative brain condition in his latter years.

Wonder what would happen to the game of football if it was ever proved that every time you headed a ball it did damage to the brain?

The whole game would change out of all recognition. Helmets like in American Football I wonder?

Very sad to hear this as Tony was one of my heroes.
I well remember standing on the 'Mini Kop' not long after he signed for us, and he crashed a superb header against the bar at the other end. Boy, did the Kop go quiet.
