Im really hoping Tom Pope is on TMs radar. He's 2 years left on his current deal at Bury but they want rid of him and offering him a free transfer.
I'd not be surprised if some of the vincelot money is not used to help him get his contract cancelled at Bury.
At 6'3" and 30 years of age he could well be the experienced striker TM has referred to as what we need. He gives us a different approach to what type of striker we currently have and is a proven goal scorer too.
I believe he's on a good wage at bury but they want rid... So may pay him up to get him to leave. Come on TM do the business!

What? The fat, drinking and smoking past-it player, that even Vale fans don't want back? Read their forum.

According to my bury supporting friend Tom Pope embarrassed himself on social media with some tin-foil hat conspiracy theories abt 9/11.

Oh and he wasn't good enough to get into their team very offen

I want us to sign a goal-scorer or (at the very least) a Championship has-been. Pope's the wrong side of 30, and (barring a monster season in League 2 four years ago) rarely breaks double figures.

If we are going to target players like Tom Pope I'd sooner give George Thomas more game time until January.

Yeah I'm not sure I'd want him either. I think I'd rather take a chance on a Premier League youngster on loan. Strikes me as a bit of a League 1 clogger and not a quality footballer.

Yes I agree. I'd sooner give our youngsters a chance if that's the best we can do.

Lads, he might not be the ideal footballer but you need to sign players to get out the league not sign ready to win the championship!!!
Suggest you look at the stats again.
15/16 season
37 league games 6 goals 7 assists
7 cup games 1 goal 4 assists
44 games 7 goals 11 assists.
Contributed to 18 goals.
14/15 season
33 league games 8 goals 3 assists
3 cup games 4 goals 0 assists
Total 36 games 12 goals 3 assists
Contributed to 15 goals
13/14 season
43 league games 12 goals 5 assists
8 cup games 4 goals 2 assists.
Total 51 games 16 goals 7 assists
Contributed to 23 goals.
Played a lot of games and regularly contributed at the right end to help get results.
We need players for now too not just next 2/3 years.

As a Walsall fan, I hope you sign him.

Always better to sign players on the way up, rather than on the way down though. Especially when he's likely to have to accept a big drop in his £4k wages, which won't leave him the most motivated player.

He's neither on the way up or down... League one is the the best he's ever been I believe.
Plus he's still got a 2 year deal to negotiate out of and then 2 years of employment at a club for those 2 years also. Not exactly gonna be out of pocket is he!!
Ps you enjoy Simeon Jackson.

I meant in terms of up or down in terms of age and career, clearly not in terms of league.

The contract will be worth nothing when Bury go bump, which isn't far away, hence why they're off loading their top earners to anyone that will take them.

We'll enjoy Jackson as back up to Bakayoko, don't worry. We've got a habit of getting the best out of players that get criticised by fans elsewhere. Bradshaw being the latest example.

Fair play, no criticism of Jackson just not a player he was in his Norwich days. Don't expect more than 4/5 goals.
Big rebuild job your gaffers got on there after the bad luck of missing out in the playoffs. Sign of the times players move on too quickly

There was always going to be a mass exodus if we didn't go up, however unlike what a lot of other clubs fans think, there's only three, maybe four players that Walsall fans wanted to keep. Those being Bradshaw, Sawyers and Demetriou, and maybe Forde.

Demetriou was always going back down South, and Bradshaw and Sawyers wanted Championship football.

The rest really weren't that great, and were offered contracts accordingly. They worked well as a team, but had big individual flaws, mostly their lack of aggression and bottle, which showed in the play offs. They weren't up for games in front of big crowds, and that's what cost us automatic promotion.

Tom Pope has had one good season at league two level. At league one level he is nothing more than a bottom end striker.

Based on what? Think you need to see his stats before making comments like that. Not a lot in it I think you'll see, and that prolific season being the difference.
Sure he's not a regular 20+ goal striker.
It's not all about goals scored its about his link up play too, Ariel threat, giving defenders a hard time.
Something we do not have!!!

Would you have considered Armstrong a better option than Pope this time last year?

Fans are obsessed with past records, when there are unearthed gems out there waiting to be given a chance and prove themselves.

Bury fans would drive Tom Pope to us. I asked Vale fans about him and they responded either with this ":woot:" or by simply saying he's awful. Yet you people will not want Leon Best but will want a striker who scored 6 times in 36 games last year. Christ alive.

I do believe in finding these unearthed gems and creating a player but we have a team of kids already.
But sometimes experience over youth is key when your looking at a target man.
Knowing when to hold, role, pull the defender, doing the ugly side of the game to create a opening for the more tricky technical players to whip in.
Look at last season for example we solely relied upon pace and AA for goals.
You need a plan B

Tom Pope played 176 league games for Vale and scored 59 league goals for us - nigh on a record of 1 in 3 which isn't a completely terrible ratio for a striker in the lower leagues. However, 31 of those league goals came in our promotion campaign from L2 when we had a decent side for that level, we had good service to him and he came up against poor quality defenders that he could bully (please also note that he was our penalty taker and also like to take any free-kicks around the penalty area). Since that season, where he obtained legend status at Vale, he has scored 26 league goals in 113 league games in League 1 because he doesn't have his own way with defenders

I wouldn't be unhappy if he joined us. Saw him play a few times at Gresty Road, admittedly some years ago, and despite his size and potential threat from set pieces, he was able to link up play and pass the ball on the ground when needed. As with most Crewe players though, you get the feeling they are encouraged to be nicey nicey, tippy tappy without much steel in the team. They possibly didn't play to his strengths and I'm sure TM would be the right kind of manager to get him playing at his best.

He always worked hard at Vale but he lacks that cutting edge and intelligence to be a top L1 striker who will score 20+ goals per season, in fact he has only achieved that feat once in his entire career

Bury seem to be losing striker after striker at the moment and yet they have still transfer listed him - says it all really doesn't it?

They need him off the pay roll too? We shifted vincelot on, people move players on for different reasons. Sure he may not of been the signing they hoped maybe, are they playing to his strengths. We don't no, but it's horses for courses.
We need that bully, oh and a penalty taker! As I said on a earlier on its not just about his goals, it's what he offers others also. So what he can give to George Thomas or Marvin Sordell.

Past records are what you judge people on, you cannot sign a player and say he's gonna score 20+ this season. You don't but a car on next years mot, it's on its history and condition.
But if these stats you think are a shit low end league one striker at 6'3" with no injury issues then I don't no what will help get you out this league
*131 league one and cup appearances
*35 goals
*56 goals contributed to his club by his goals or assists.

If you're not the man himself, are you the guy that put Michael Owen's 32 page brochure together?

I should be a agent, beats my day job!

Transfermarkt web site can help out a lot tho, add that to your own knowledge of the football league...

rather than Pope, there's a young Nuneatonian who is currently with Motherwell I think,
he's 6' 3" and is round about 21 yrs old, Blyth i think his name is, used to play for Nuneaton Griff,
he may be well worth a punt

Absolutely fucking not. He's shit and a bit of a pisshead by all accounts.

Plus he's about 24 now. I played with him at youth level.
