Today's game is all about money, and the FA cup has been devalued financially by other competitions. Those of us old enough to remember the game before the premier league, the champions league and the Europa league can count ourselves lucky. We at least have our memories.

We won it when the F.A.Cup was the best domestic Cup competition to win in this country. now the F.A.Cup is very much devalued.

I know I'm getting on a bit but going to the final by train with my dad and brother in law was a special day. Coming home to find my mum, wife and sister had festooned my mum an dads house in sky blue meant so much. I swear my sister who had never been to a game was more excited than me or dad

Great memories. So many houses in Coventry were decorated especially for the day. People who weren't interested in football still got involved. There is a great news clip from Midlands Today or Central News whwere they showed the City centre at 3pm on the day of the final. It really was a ghost town. Everyone was watching the final.
Writing this has just reminded me about coming back into Coventry on the coach after the quarter and semi finals. People were out on the street waving to fans on the coaches, particularly after the Leeds game.just a taste of what it would be like on final weekend.

You got to wonder if there was still European football attached to the FA Cup whether it would be taken more seriously by Championship & PL clubs. We would have European football if it wasn't for the Heysel ban.
It's a sad indictment of the Cup when you see even Championship clubs rotating players as league more important.

European football[edit]
The FA Cup winners qualify for the following season's UEFA Europa League (formerly named the UEFA Cup; from its launch in 1960 until 1998, they entered the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners' Cup instead). This European place applies even if the team is relegated or is not in the English top flight. In the past, if the FA Cup winning team also qualified for the following season's Champions League or Europa League through their league position, then the losing FA Cup finalist were given this European berth instead. FA Cup winners enter the Europa League at the group stage.
