We are so bad at them it’s time to give it its own thread.
We are slow
indecisive
only win about 50% of the first ball
And MVE long throws are a waste of time.
If we don’t know what to do just
throw it up the line.

I find MVE’s ‘long’ throws to be extremely unconvincing, but I suppose one did lead to a goal against Swansea last weekend.

Saw their bench celebrate when MVE went for his second ‘long’ throw of the night. Pointless.

It’s in the clubs DNA. We’ve been useless at them for at least the last 20 years. Until recently we were also as bad with corners. IIRC last season Eccles had taken over 100 and we’d scored 1 goal from them.

Ball boys are no longer allowed the throw the ball to a player unless it come direct to them off the pitch. They have to put it on the cone for the player to pick it up.

But if they don’t do that what’s the punishment? Lampard isn’t going to tell them off

Need King to invest in some elite tactician ballboys, the ballboy deck is far off top 6 atm

It really is weird how Major Tom chose to bring it up tonight, I’ve thought for years how slow & indecisive we are with throw-ins, but I actually thought whilst watching tonight that the subject must have been discussed in training thought we were definitely quicker tonight.

Tbf read the ballboy rules. Not a recent rule.

Think it’s official in the premier league but it’s also followed the the EFL.

This drives me up the wall. Almost every throw in that we have in the opposition half is thrown backwards. This often results in the ball being played back to the keeper who will frequently pump it forward where we will have a good chance of losing possession. I’ve seen this happen even when we are as advanced as having a throw level with the opposition six yard box.
Surely we can take a chance sometimes when we are so far advanced in opposition territory and try to launch an assault on goal? If we lose the ball, so be it. At least we will have had a go.

Same with free kicks in their half. We invariably take a short free kick and pass it back to a CB.
We rarely bring men up and launch the ball into the box.
Wouldn’t mind if the short kick was to keep the attack going and moving forward but it never is.

So we keep hearing, until we play an away match and none of them do.

I really want to know what happened in that one game where we had all kinds of innovative set pieces that worked a treat then just decided to never do it again. Was it one of the Carr games?

Bidwell was noticeably quicker vs Leeds. He even through one from so far it only just landed on the pitch as he was in such a rush.

It does my head in when he grabs the ball normally as he never takes any of the options and then gets frustrated at the lack of options.

*I will never criticise Bidwell again. This feels like blasphemy.

I think it was, we did it a couple of times after Lampard took the reigns but then it's stopped.

Then why was our lad throwing the ball to their keeper when the play stopped for injuries and the like. He was chucking it to him just so he could bounce it and have a kick around.

Our throw-ins usually go backwards because our movement and ball holding is poor from the forwards. I suspect if we threw forwards we'd lose possession even more often.

It’s partly this I agree and partly our attitude to risk.

it’s safer to throw it back to a full back than it is to risk the forward losing it.

The problem is the full back then plays it to the centre half who then plays it to the keeper and Dovin then lumps it forward to the forwards.

We have more chance of retaining the ball from a forward throw than we do the punt up field but for some reason we persist with this madness.

What's Aron Gunnerson doing these days, needs to join our elite coaching staff on how to throw a ball in and pick one of our players out in the penalty area.

Have you seen the way the receiver reacts when the ball is thrown their way? It's like the ball has somehow in flight transformed into a steaming festering radioactive turd and they just want no part of it.

Absolutely ,100%, this.

We work so bloody hard (and often, slowly) to get up the park, and then immediately chuck it back to the keeper when we're finally there. Boils my piss, to coin a phrase!
