I think kilbane was carsley and the frenchies graham carr but the rest have been decent too so far!

Barton looks to have everything to be the stand-out player in this league. Bearing in mind his short pre-season and therefore comparative lack of fitness; I can't wait to see him in month's time

I know that kilbane is really close mates with carsley and the 2 frenchies were on trial / training at newcastle. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Not really an agenda though as the ones he probably did spot are proving decent too

Just because Thorn got sacked, doesn't mean EVERYTHING he did was rubbish. He is a really good Scout - and in that capacity, should be at a club above League 1.

Where did I not say he was responsible for spotting the others?

Just that don't think that Kilbane could be considered an unknown gem unearthed by great Scouting.

More than prepared to give Thorn credit for Iall the other new signings though. However if any don't come up to scratch wouldn't want blame attached anywhere else either.

Don't think Ball a particularly good addition, but loan players generally just a case of who somebody has available rather than any scouting involved, so no blame can be attached to anybody for him.

Congratulations. Did you advocate securing their services at any time amongst the hundreds of names as potential targets over the summer?

The reality is, all the summer acquisitions look good. Which is one hell of a hit rate that some - just some - credit should be due. Hence the thread's ambition.

That is to say they look good to date. And if we can draw conclusions with regards the manager so early in the season, then the parameters stand good for the players, don't they?

I forgot about Fleck, although with Baker playing as well as he is - he might struggle to get back in the side!

It is unfair to criticise him for his performance as manager in a thread talking about his ability as a scout. Whether Kilbane was a Carsley connection or not, he's still an addition sanctioned by Thorn. The frenchies may well have been training at Newcastle, but do we get the nod on them without Thorns link to Graham Carr? and anyway, doesn't Thorn still need to make a decision on whether or not they're capable of performing in this league?

Over the last 5 years or so - i don't actually know how long he's been here - he's been responsible for bringing in a lot of talented players. Our big problem is, we haven't yet found a manager who can get the best out of them consistently.

Can you not - just for a minute - forget about his managerial performance, and use this thread to judge his performance as a scout? There are plenty of other threads where you can vent your rage at him as a manager.

I merely pointed out I'd heard of the above players before.

Get a grip.

Like I said, he is a well respected scout and I'd have him back at the club in a second.

Wasn't having a go at him in this thread either, but don't think that any right-thinking person could suggest that Kilbane is a Thorn scouting success.

People talk about those with an anti-Thorn agenda, but bloody hell....

I don't think many doubt that he was a decent scout but we don't really know who he scouted and who he didn't to be able to judge. People have different opinions on scouting and what a decent scout should be doing.

My idea of a scout is somebody who will go through the lower leagues / abroad to find players from nowhere that will turn out decent. Imagine if we had found Bigi in Burundi kicking a ball about in his village, that would have been great scouting.

In football you have agents phoning up clubs offering their players, as well as clubs trying to offload players on loan. Sometimes the bigger clubs do tout their youngsters to try and get them some experience / put them in the shop window.

We will never know the situation on each player and how they came to be here.

Look, I'm not going to rise to this one again. The point I was making was that they were off everyone's radar - unlike, say Stuart Beavon, for example. Over all the summer, and all the literally hundreds of names banded about on this forum, I bet they weren't mentioned once. By anyone.

Thorn bought in players that were never expected by anyone in the mainstream; and if they appear a great success, then some credit is due. That was the simple point made

if the new signings were all down to AT then credit to him ............. (comment last week from Waggott was that AT and RS both had lists of players and SW tried to do the right deal to bring a player in) ...... dont wish any ill will to AT at all and if people want to give him all the credit makes no real difference to me.

However there is a big difference between spotting a player with certain attributes and getting that player in, to perform to the best of his ability or fitting that player into a cohesive team .......... yes it was early days, the team hadnt gelled under AT yet some subtle changes by members of the same coaching team and the team turn in a 120 minute performance. He was there to manage the team .............. his ability in that detracts from any legacy that is perceived

For me I am prepared to accept he spotted good players, but that was his forte and should have kept to that

just my opinion

The Bizzarre thing is in the two Bigger games this squad has held its own and better.I would wager that apart from the backline this squad is superior to most of that available last season .
