I seem to remember that Thorn said he will be setting the team up differently this seaon, although his passing ethos will remain. Hmmmmm?

If you look at the fact that he's trying to sign Fleck who is very much behind the striker type player, it seems to rule out a straight 4-4-2, yet he has suggested the diamond will be dumped?

Anyone have any ideas?

I guess in the scenario that we did sign Fleck (who can also play as a striker) that either he or McSheffrey would competing with Cody for a place up top with Elliott?

Agreed. I think McSheffrey will be used more as a striker this coming season. We need more functional players in the midfield, plus I think Sheffers will score a few up front.

Unfortunately I'm not old enough to remember the Hill era or tactics employed at the time, but yes. Maybe he is thinking of playing someone in the number 10 role behind the striker with the wingers pushing forward to get the crosses in. The only problem with putting crosses in would be our lack of height up front. Not sure how tall Elliott is?

I think we'll play Cody and Elliot up top with Fleck
Behind (if he comes). The manager always has to praise new signings, not like he is going to say 'I don't know how am going to fit him in, it's going to be a struggle' lol

He also has confidently predicted Cody will be top scorer in League 1. Also said that Elliot was being chased by some championship clubs but chose us. I'm expecting great things.

I had in mind he was tall for some reason. But the fact we don't have a single target man does slightly excite me for some reason. Quick and direct through balls against big cumbersome defenders could be the trick.

However history does suggest a big target man with presence is needed to be successful in this league. We need someone with ariel presence.

Just spoke to a mate who's a Rangers fan. He says Fleck's main problem at the minute is he's lost his identitiy in a way.

He has been played as a striker, behind the striker and on both wings.

He reckons if we allow him stability, let him nail down one position and make it his own, he could really turn out decent for us.

Fingers crossed we get the deal done, although history would suggest we won't see this deal over the line, much like many others in the last few years......

Is that so we have someone to DAZzle the keepers eyes with his super clean kit?

Most likely the juggernauts down at Peterborough. Mighty glad to have beaten them off.

what worries me is that we dont have many players who are physically strong playing.... or that dominate by their presence. What i saw of League 1 last season there were plenty of big quick players in most teams and to some degree we have match that. Old saying of you have to earn the right to play your football ....... we need ball winners and i do not see them in the squad so far..... but i guess it is early days yet

The likes of McSheffery, Baker, Bell, etc seem to disappear or bounce off when the going gets tough and the young lads are still building the physique to mix it

Depends very much on the club's transfer activity between now and the start of the season-the likes of Fleck aren't really the battling type; the likes of Kilbane (if kept fit) would be ideal for a ball winning role. The centre of midfield looks very bare indeed at the moment and is probably as high a priority as the forward line.

Our problem will be all the 'attacking signings' if it all happens, Keogh and Cranie leave to put it politely we are f*cked. Sign a solid a CB!! (could do with an average keeper to replace Joe as well tbh)

Anyone watched Elliot in recent times and give us an idea on what sort of player he is and how he plays?

AT says hes pacey and on the shoulder kind of attacker. But in fairness thats what id hoped and heard Cody was and he doesn't quite play like that.

Switch to 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 with the two wingers/auxillary forwards working off the central striker? That formation has been in vogue elsewhere a bit recently. If that were the case, maybe Shef and Elliott working off Cody? Not sure Shef has the speed for it now mind.

Have I missed something? (feel sillly if so) Or are you working on the basis we need to cut the wage bill so he'll soon be gone?

Yep working on the assumption we're £2-2.5m. short of funding the coming season meaning at least two more sales and anyone on £8-9k. are out.

In truth if we could offload mcsheffrey and even bell then I think this would be a good idea. If they are between them taking £800k in wages out the club this is not a good return on investment.
There is some evidence we are now operating under a budget if sorts and we are looking at signing players. Losing these wages would enable is to buy 3 players of league 1 standard who would be younger and hungrier and have cash to spare.
Now I am not one to make controversial statements but I also believe if we could get £1.5 million for Bigiamara and we could re-invest at least 75% of that I would sell him tomorrow. He may struggle to yield that value in years to come.

Yep I accept these are the decisions to make, and actually believe it could be better for the players overall development, don't think this division will suit him at all.
