Thorn Eyes Swift Summer Signing To Start Coventry's Summer Spending

ANDY Thorn is looking to act fast to land his first summer signing after Coventry City’s uncertain future has started to look a bit brighter.

Sky Blue owners Sisu have agreed a budget for next season, enabling the club to sign off their overdue accounts and come out of the transfer embargo imposed by the Football League.

And although City have missed out on key targets – frustratingly by just a few days because they were unable to trade and players opted to go elsewhere – Thorn is confident he can recruit enough quality to help what he hopes will be a charge back to the Championship.

“It’s a big weight off our shoulders,” said the relieved boss, who insists there’s no time to lose in his quest to land a goalscorer and a couple of midfielders.

“The shackles are off and all the hard work can start now to try to do some business and we want to try to get as many as we can.

“I haven’t been off the phone all day after we got the news through, which is great, and there are more people who fancy coming.

“It’s disappointing that we lost out on players who we had shown round the Ricoh and wanted to sign but it is nice now that we can go and do something, so let’s see what we can get.

“We are acting fast because we have had things ticking over ready for when it was going to be lifted but it is not as easy as people think.”

Shrewsbury Town striker and Cov Kid James Collins and attacking Bradford midfielder David Syers were among Thorn’s top targets but both opted to sign elsewhere because of the transfer embargo, Collins joining Swindon and Syers Doncaster.

“Yes it is disappointing to have missed out on targets but there is not point dwelling on it,” said the 45-year-old manager.

“I am sure the likes of Syers and Collins will be gutted now and had they hung on a couple of days we could have got things done.

That's what worries me the most, we need a damn sight more than 3 players to be ready for next season

In reality they will be sitting at home giving a sigh of relief as they think they have dodged a bullet in not signing for Cov.

What happened to the players he had lined up ready to go bang, bang, bang. Surely more than just the 2.

Here lads, I've got a great idea. It'll crack you up this one. Why don't we just moan, winge and complain every time Thorn says something? Brilliant, eh? A

Would just be nice to see that there was actually some efforts going on behind the scenes to have transfers ready as we were told.

To be fair I like Thorn and if you look through my posts I've been one of the optimistic people on here. Surely though with the bare bones squad that we've got, Thorn saying he's looking to bring in a couple of players must worry you ? Especially if we lose players...

I'll wait and see what the squad looks like at the beginning of the season before I bemoan his efforts. It is a shame that the other two got away though.

It's barely been 24 hours yet......

I know it's been a tough time but some people need to get back their sense of realism.

or you could just continue to make shitty pro thorn remarks in every single topic,i mean you were proved right last year!.............oh wait

if we had so many signings lined up we shouldnt really have to wait weeks...could be done in a few days

i fear this is gonna be the next prolonged sisu BS where we check news everyday for new signings but only get promises and status updates till we sign 2 players on deadline day and thats it

i wanna see some signings ASAP

i predicted 4,but i still dont think 3 is end of the world if they are 2 midfielders and a striker, although id love to add a LB to that

Give it a bit of time guys it has only been 24 hours since the embargo was lifted

Just because someone is said to be a target doesn't mean that they will come. I assume Collins and Syers would have been kept informed and if the lifting of the embargo was that close (the League would have had the figures a few days even a week before to check) then you have to ask why sign for someone else? It has to be that they got a better deal at Swindon and Doncaster so they were never coming here in the first place.

We are not going to be entering into bidding wars with other clubs to get players - we just cant afford it

Lets face it 2 have actually signed because they were out of contract - the others might have offers pending and until we talk actual money they wouldn't be signing anything.

CovisGod, This is what Thorn said. “The shackles are off and all the hard work can start now to try to do some business and we want to try to get as many as we can.
As many as we can.
Valiant, you're a class act aren't you, is there ANYBODY on here you haven't insulted?

I have to be honest, I'm somewhat more optimistic today than I was a week ago. However, recent history with SISU and their particularly sly way of operating has taught me to be cautious. There are still 9 days of the extended early bird ST prices remember and maybe sales were not quite picking up at the pace hoped for, so miraculously the accounts are filed and approved and the embargo lifted..............the cynic in me would suggest that if some of the targets are not now captured within this timeframe { As they are all lined up anyway} then it could have been merely a ploy to grab another fistfull of early cash without any further outlay whatsoever.

agrre with ashdown - got to feel a bit more optimistic with the embargo being lifted. lets hang fire for a few days, maybe 2 weeks and see what happens. i think by then SISU's intentions for the coming season will be pretty clear.

i said a few weeks ago they really only have 2 choices: 1 - to walk away and cut their losses, or 2 - to invest in the team, get a share in the ground, attract as many fans as poss and increase revenue to start making a profit for their investors or to make the club a better prospect to sell on than it is in its current state.

the only way to do this is to bring in a few decent signings and give us a chance of a promotion push/play off place for this season.

i'm not being pro SISU before some of you start to shoot me down - just keeping an open mind and feeling slighlty more positive than i was last week!!!

I'd like to report I've got irons in the fire and I'm very close to securing a steak slice and hot sausage roll, just waiting on my account details to be verified at the cash machine.

In the interests of transparency I'd like to tell you, but not until I've filed the accounts sometime in 2014. Until then I've been placed on a bakery embargo.

Somebody stated previously that they had been told that new signings had been shown around the ground. This was when they were buying their season tickets. It is interesting that AT said in his recent interview that it was disappointing to lose out on players that had already been shown around The Ricoh. Guess they were not lying after all...
