What happened to this lad? When he went to Liverpool he was the next big thing. Ok the injury possibly affected his confidence a bit but how come he's struggling to get in the squad nowadays if he had/has such promise?

That is why I don't get carried away by all this Maddison hype, seen it too many times over the years.
Players with promise yet nothing comes of it and if they are any good, we never get to see the heights of their career.

I think the answer to the OP, is nothing happened to CT in regards to his development. In my opinion he has now just
found his highest level, which doesn't make him a bad player but makes him limited when compared to Champ and Prem players, hence his Liverpool experience.

CT is a very good athlete with good size but if you look at other attributes needed to step up they are average at pro level. Every player finds a level and even if given a chance at the higher grade all will end up at the correct level for them. I don't think comparing players new or old means anything or finds the answer to the OP, for me its about attributes and levels.

Please don't mention Maddison and Thomas in the same breath.

I've never seen him have a good game. Got nothing against the lad personally but he clearly isn't good enough and never has been for us. Whether that be injuries I don't know. He will never play higher than league 1 and in truth I suspect when he is done with Cov he won't be playing league football tbh.

Don't write off Thomas yet. Personally I think it's a confidence thing with him. There are plenty of late developers in football. I'm not saying he's going to turn around this season or with us but I won't be surprised to see his name in the Premiership in three or so years time.

Does need to move on & make a fresh start maybe down in League 2 and see where he can go from there.

I wonder if anyone said this about Vardy?

If It's a confidence problem after 2 seasons of shite from him, then the kid is borderline depressed and should seek a shrink.

Are you serious? In June when his contract is up, he'll probably end up at Nuneaton with Billy.

Different players altogether, you can tell just by watching Madders play he has that extra 'something' that so many prospects seem to lose.

My only qualm is with his fragility; get that lad on some fackin' weights.

The lad does seem to have gone backwards or at least stood still in his development.

Seems to me when he first made the team he was played wider and encouraged to get forward. Not a wide player but he was in a sense encouraged to take risks. Under SP he was anchored to a holding role in midfield and stopped trying to take risks at all, always look for the safe pass. He isn't my idea of a holding midfielder because you rarely see him win the ball in tackles and actually doesn't look comfortable sitting in front of the defence. He has a good engine, is a big lad with a reasonable touch but has no confidence. Can he go higher than L1 - not at the moment but right environment etc who knows, I don't see a Premiership player though

However the effect of that SP role seems to me to have eroded his confidence. He plays a safe game, short passes side to side, but in doing so doesn't push himself, which in turn feeds in to his lack of belief/confidence. Not saying he doesn't try but he isn't extending his attributes. This season he has been unlucky with injury and had precious little game time in the first team either (better players ahead of him) to get his touch or his confidence back. There is something there but its buried under several issues.

He may need to move on, drop a division to get an extended run in a team. I would think had the squad been fully fit then TM may well have sent him out on loan this season for a period

He'll stay in league football, guaranteed.

Yes, really, I am serious. And playing at Nunny next season might well be the making of him. It's happened before and I reckon Thomas has better chance of a Phoenix moment than most.

We are all still waiting for him to make leaps and bounds but I just can't see it materialising. It probably hasn't helped with the shite players and shite managers he has had to play with/under over the past few years. I know talent should come to the fore itself but it can't have helped working for the likes of Andy Thorn or Pressley who have probably ended up restricting any progress. Saying that, why didn't Liverpool sign him? Assumably just not good enough.

I'm inclined to agree with what LAST has said.

Whilst I agree they are different players, Bigi showed promise (IMO although not everyone would agree), got his move, and look at him now. He showed that 'extra something' and it's not worked out.

So in essence I agree that I won't commit to the Maddison hype just yet

Good point Sam... They may as well have pissed that money down the drain.

Ryan Hayes was last years sensation, he is getting nearer to regaining first team place now but has been out of contention for some time.

If you talk about individuals and start comparing it will not answer the question. So far i seen CT, Maddison, Bigi and Vardy's name mentioned on here, all are different all have different attritbutes. And in the end all will find the natural level that they can compete in. Players who have stepped up that have limited attributes will fall to the correct level, not because they are bad but because other in the squad members in the same position have more attributes.

And for me its as simple as that, form, injuries and confidence have not made CT stop in levels, his attributes have. He will make a good living out of the game and during parts of his career will find the right home and hit form, but his level is what it is. I wish him well just dont see him going much higher than he currently plays, if he does good luck to him.

Ryan hanyes is a boy in a mans body and TM knew this when he walked in the door, he was also played out of lack of options other than being ready for being a first team starter week in week out. TM said within days he needed to be stronger and needed time to develope. He is another that other clubs are looking at because of his attributes, age, size, speed, athleticism and ability. If he now adds strength while learning his position through coaching the last thing he needs is playing time to gain confidence and decision making, this is all about attributes.

He is also maturing his interview the other day sounded like he has no pressure on him, just a desire to win a starting place, but he understand Stokes is playing well and he needs to wait his time for a chance to shine. He will agian in my opinion have a career in the game and attributes to do very well, but time will tell the level that he will play at and if fans give him time all will be well for him.

Again, Bigi is/was a more defensive-minded midfielder, however applying the same 'I won't believe the hype till he shows the goods consistently' mentality over every promising young player is a tad myopic.

I will say that Maddison needs to be allowed to progress at L1 level before he's inevitably flogged to a Premiership club - it'd benefit both CCFC and Madders himself.
