Only two places and seven points higher.
Granted, if we were on 42 points now, we wouldn't all be panicking.
Shows what a fine line there has been between staying in this league in previous seasons and the position we find ourselves in today.
Also in comparison to just before our last game in march a year ago, we had scored 40 goals and this year it's 35! Again, not much difference, but that would be the extra seven points I suppose.
Can't believe how similar the seasons are really!

That's interesting, isn't it? Really we weren't much better last season. Those seven points would come in handy now.

But 42 points with 7 games left points so much more to a possibility of safety doesn't it.

Usually teams are relegated between 45-50 points.

Every season can be different mind.

I thought it was interesting, but I am sad haha.
Did all the players that left leave such a gaping hole as some make out?

Very true Otis. Think all three were relegated on 42 last season.

The difference being, last season we had some quality players in the likes of King, Westwood & Gunnarsson. King and Juke were regularly hitting the net. I had us down from the start of the season, but i'm starting to change my mind, finally a bit of passion and fight out on the pitch. First 2 games in April are vital, 4 points out of those and we'll worry the others.

not sure there is much difference on the goals scored to be honest

Feb & March 2011 we scored 9 conceded 16 in 10 games . Feb & March 2012 we scored 11 conceded 14 in 11 games

in 2011 April/May we scored 13 but conceded 8 in 8 games. We have 7 games left ...... is it unreasonable to think we might get 10 goals or so ? Personally I wouldnt mind 7 one nil wins but I think thats a bit remote! How many we concede is going to be just as crucial.

That doesnt say to me that having those players last year, they did anything more than average to be honest. Am inclined to agree with skybluesteve76 that the two seasons are quite similar and that he is right to perhaps question the actual value of some of the players that left in terms of our league position

I am convinced that Juke was a hindrance. Really liked him as a player but he simply didn't suit our style of play at all. I wonder if AT was actually okay in letting him go and if he had spotted this flaw too, or whether he did wish to hold on to him like he said at the time.

Be interesting to know.

I think Juke will improve with a bit more experience. Needs to be holding the center of the pitch up front rather than trying to be here there and every where. However thats someone elses problem not ours.

Not sure many of our players suited our style of play start of this season, dont think AT quite knew how to make it work, knew what he wanted but making it work was something else. Difference now is we have some pace in the side and if we play the diamond it is flatter (ie no big gap between tip and base) makes us more compact, allows fullbacks to be covered going forward, and we support not isolate the front two. We work as a team not different segments.

as the op says there is no great difference between this season or previous ones. Whether we have bigger name players or the ones we have now the results are not greatly different. To me it raises all sorts of questions regarding, set up, the costs, the finances, the value for money we have got from players over the years etc

He always seemed to drift out wide to the flanks which gave us no options through the centre. He strikes me as the ideal old fashioned centre forward, and he would be better used as such.

Agree.

Clinton Morrison used to be the same. All over the pitch except for where we really needed him to be.

Clinton was a superb crosser of the ball (and Juke wasn't too bad) the problem is when they drift wide it requires someone to get on the end of those balls and the best person to do so is crossing! You need someone to step up and fill in/push forward but it never seems to happen for us.

Yes, I feel the same. I liked Juke and he scored some vital goals, but can't help feeling the team is playing better without him.

So basically, if we stay up, was losing King and Westy as bad as we thought back in August.
What if we finish with a similar points total?

I also think the most obvious improvement since the turn of the year is team spirit and team work. Also a willingness to fight for the cause, something that perhaps is sadly lacking with so called bigger named players?

Not forgetting that thorn only came in back end of last year, so IF we still had those players and played like we are now.....could it be that we would indeed be higher in the league? IMO if we only had kept King we would not have say, lost to palace away, drew with reading at home or lost away at blackpool. Straight away is the 7 point difference. Yes it has taken until now for AT to sort his shit out, but he hasn't been helped by the "senior" players not performing and the problems that come with inexperience and youth. He also made shocking errors both tactically and formation wise, sub's etc. I just thibnk that looking at what we are now doing with what we have makes me wonder if we could indeed be decent given the right players. As the OP say's we are not a million miles away from last season's tally and it has been done with the team pulled apart constantly.

Personally, I was only really concerned about King as I wasn't sure where the goals would come from. Juke and McSheff have done their bit ably assisted by Deegan and Platt. We obviously could have done someone who could put the ball in the back of the net for fun, but to be fair to Juke he wasn't that sort of player anyway.

I think if we had kept hold of King, we would have those additional 7 points that were mentioned earlier in the thread.

I agree. Shame we couldn't have persuaded him to stay. How many has he got for Brum this season?

Mcdonald gets into good position but I think Nimely and Platt when they are not scoring bring more stuff to the game than Mcdonald.

To be honest I still wasn't confident even when we went 2-0 up because was so nervous! I was praying Thorn would put Deegan on for one of our strikers! He knows better than me though!

Didn't people say Westwood was worth about 10 points a season too?

platt will not play in both the peterboro and bristol city games - we will need something from both of these - interesting to see which platt plays in - he cannot manage 2 games in 48 hours

So considering how much weaker the squad is this year compared to last, if we stay up this year have we over achieved or did we under achieve last year?

I would say that we definitely under-achieved last term and that this season is neither. I expected a struggle and we have had one.

AT giving him a rest in most of the week games and saying it is hard for him to play 3 games in 7 days or whatever it is.

Think he said it's hard for him to play a game in 90 minutes.
