1st season in league 1 we missed the play offs by 19 points

we had 10 points deducted and only 3 points from 8 games. so which team is better.
This is the team that beat preston in the jpt

Murphy/Burge
clarke/willis
edjenguele/ Reda
wood/ ricketts
Adams/Stokes

Fleck/Fleck
baker/o brien
bailey/vincelot
jennings/ Lamierias

Mcsheffrey/ Maddison
Clarke/ Armstrong

imho 2012/13 team was stronger in goal - and 2 or 3 players were at a similar level - but beyond that, I think the current team is stronger

surely this is the year

I'd only take Baker and Wood from that squad over current. Willis looks a little shaky but so did Clarke in that first season.

There is also Thorn (shaw)/Mowbray to consider

i could have given you the team from the yeovil game at the start of that season but the likes of reece brown/ Chris hussey/ callum ball and billy daniels would send shivers down your spine

True. Just think how much even better we would have been under Andy Thorn. Doesn't bear thinking about.

The side that was really flying under robins was

-----------Murphy
Christie - Edge - Wood - Reckord/Adams
-------Jennings--Bailey
---baker --moussa----mcsheff
------------mcgoldrick

I'd say the defence now is better, the defensive midfielders now are better and the rest is about the same( besides the goalie obviously). So our team now is better and the manager is probably better.

Even though they're both great young players Maddison and Armstrong there is literally no chance Mowbray would pick them over Moussa and McGoldrick if they were available.

I'd say Christie is better than Willis. Murphy is better than Burge
Baker would get in this team
Mcgoldrick would get in this team

I'd say left back is probably the same level
defence if probably the same
And Vincelot and fleck on current form are better than Bailey and Jennings.

I love Maddison, but like STP says not sure he'd get in over mcgoldrick and baker.

What about this side against the Sixfields side?

Wilson v Armstrong
Clarke v Lamerias
Baker v O'Brien
Moussa v Maddison

Couldn't choose to be honest.

McGoldrick wouldn't be picked over Armstrong and think about the difference between Reda and Rickettes compared to Edje and Wood. The defence now is a lot better.

I presume Moussa has been injured (?) as he has only played 14 games in over a year for Charlton.

I don't think there is that much to choose between wood and Reda tbh. Personally although the Armstrongs been on fire, mcgoldrick is a full international and scored for fun in a very functional robins side, Mowbray would probably start them both, at the expense of Lameires or Maddison.Ricketts is better than edge, but the rest of the defence are of a similar quality. I'm not knocking the current team, but it's easy to forget how good we were under robins. And mcgoldrick was often the one man show. Also it's arguable that the league has declined in the last 2 seasons.

He's struggle to stake a claim, was mainly used as a sub last season.

I don't think we are as strong as that team mentioned from 3 years ago.

Clarke as much as he was a total arsehole he was a brilliant player. Baker was a class act and league 1 promotion level.

Christie as others have said is a better right back. Murphy is a better goalie no doubts.

All this considered we were much better than now but the league is a crap league and it's more about teams getting on a run and team cohesion and spirit and belief.

The team we had in our first season imo should have been promoted, if we had TM then I expect we would have been. We had depth in that squad, I think if it was this team vs MR team on a one off it would be this team, over the course of a season it would be that season as it was able to cope with injuries.

cant get over the baker love in - yes he had 1 high scoring season , but for every goal he scored, he was responsible for 1 conceded

Yep, he was a terrible keeper for us without any shadow of a doubt.

Scored many goals, created many goals and has a genuine passion for the club. That is why he is 'loved'.

Would be a brilliant asset for any club at this level.

The difference between Reda and Wood is huge. He may make stupid decisions sometimes but think about the presence Reda has on the pitch. He contributes going foward(was joint top scorer last season) and last season we virtually couldn't win without him in the team. Wood on the other hand was our highest payed player and was quite crap to be honest. I think Jordan Clarke was a better centre back than Wood.

----Murphy
Christie--Ricketts--Reda--Adams
------Vincelot--Fleck
Baker----Maddison---Moussa
---------Mcgoldrick

So pretty close, 5 of those players are in the current team and 6 in the old team.

That team would be frighteningly good at this level just imagine it plus a bench of:
Burge
Wood
Willis
Bailey
Lameiras
Armstrong
Clarke

The options are endless!

I'd have Lameiras in there over Baker any day of the week.

I see some still can't get over their crush.

Okay so we can look back at the 2012/13 and judge them over a season. Today's team has played three matches so it is early days and could go either way.

But I do feel this current team has a lot of head room, by that I man development potential. Not only can I see players developing during the course of this season, I can see further additions to the squad being made.
