How can £18m be justified on these two players? Whoever's in charge of recruitment up there needs sacking with the wasteful outlays they've done over the years.

What makes me laugh is that Ince left Liverpool just a few months ago for compensation that was in the thousands not millions.

Dalglish was one of the worst 'nostalgia' appointments ever.

Still less than what they paid for Henderson though.

12 million for an England striker and 6 mill for a very good young prospect isn't that ridiculous. Ridiculous that they let Ince go in the first place but there you go.

It's more the combined total LG-they often complain about the manager not being backed in the transfer market but when they do the money's often wasted on players they struggle to offload. Stewart Downing a case in point.

tbf this makes them look quite sensible compared to spending 80 million on Carroll, Henderson and Downing.

I think Sturridge will be very good for Liverpool if he goes there, not sure on Ince though

Should this thread be on a Liverpool chat site?
We support Coventry here...so I hope I will be in the majority that asks "Who cares"?

Did you not see the epic "War & Peace" style thread on Portsmouth? Over 100 pages and still going strong. Heaven knows why, but like it's been stated previously - its football!

In case you missed it Bazza.......

Don't think that's ridiculous at all, Sturridge is a very decent player, 12 million isn't ridiculous. Thomas at 6 million isn't more or less than you'd expect either.

That is why it's posted in the 'Football and Other Sports' forum, rather than the 'Coventry City' forum.

Its a lot of money for players who are 'okay'. There are better players out there in Europe that would cost half the price.

I suppose my point is that Liverpool are investing very heavily in potential ability over the here and now-and potential should not be costing what they're forking out.

BR is building for the future at liverpool so buying seasoned pro's at the age of 29-30 just wouldn't be helpful to him.

Brendan Rodgers warns Daniel Sturridge’s agents that Liverpool will not pay over odds

Brendan Rodgers has laid down Liverpool’s hard line spending policy by insisting he will abort any transfer he suspects is motivated by money rather than ambition.

In what will be seen as a veiled threat to the representatives of Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge, Rodgers recognises too many lucrative deals have been dished out at Anfield with little or no justification.

Liverpool’s £12 million pursuit of Sturridge has stalled because of financial rather than football issues, even though the player himself is keen to complete the deal, with the potential payments to agents regarding any sell-on fees a sticking point.

It is a reflection of Liverpool’s standing they have been perceived as a soft touch for the past few years, all too willing to pay out inflated transfer fees and agents payments in a desperate attempt to reclaim their elite status.

Even Blackpool, who paid just £500,000 for Thomas Ince a year ago, are confident they can bully Liverpool into paying above the Merseysiders’ £4 million valuation of their former midfielder.
Rodgers inherited a messy situation and has experienced first hand how Liverpool’s name is adding pound signs to contracts even though their current position does not warrant it.

His tough stance is not without risk given the power agents yield over their clients. It is conceivable Liverpool will miss out on potential recruits. But he is sure his idealistic principles are necessary to end the culture of waste.

“They will get a good contract coming here but if they want to argue over money, and other things that go around it, I don’t want them here,” said Rodgers. “In my experience those players will eventually let you down anyway. So, for us, it is about getting players in who are hungry to succeed and to pull on the shirt.
“That’s the simple message for any player coming here – you can’t take the money and run. You have to earn the right to play for this club and to help us succeed.

“The club are really on board with me on that. It is part of what we need to be successful again. You trace back over many years at this football club and they have brought hungry players in. They were also good players, but they were all hungry.
“I’ve seen it at Chelsea, you pay a fortune for top players and it doesn’t always work when you spent £30 million or £20 million, it doesn’t guarantee you anything.

“You could bring a boy in here on a free transfer or bring him from the Championship, all of these big players weren’t dropped out of heaven, they have to come from somewhere and the most important thing when you get that type in is that they’re hungry to succeed.

“Football is a unique business. It’s one of very few sports and industries where you can get paid very good money on potential. People will tell you what they’re going to do. I would rather reward people for what they do and then there’s no drama.”
Although Liverpool’s exile from the Champions League means attracting the world’s best talent is more difficult, Rodgers cites Luis Suarez as proof of how to get the best from a deal for both the player and the club.

“Luis Suarez is a great example,” he said. “He came in on a good contract and coming from Ajax, a proven player, but he wanted to come to this great club and thankfully he signed a new deal in the summer. He earned that.

BR just said that. He knows what he's doing.
