He kind of has a point. Although banishing teams for poor owners isn't the answer, something needs to be done.

Problem is, and most football fans can't get their head round this, to change the rules the EFL needs approval from 70% of club owners. If the rules are being harsher on club owners they aren't going to agree to it so what exactly can they do?

I think points deductions will deter a few. Look at it like this, Man City and Bournemouth have both in recent years broke ffp and the punishment was a fine for a couple of hundred grand. To an Arab sheikh and a russian billionaire, that's loose change. Not really an off put when the league title (or staying in the premier in Bournemouth's case) brings in hundreds of millions in revenue.
However, this season Man City won the title by only 2 points, an overspend means, let's say, 2 points per £100k overspend for example, then that could be the difference between league title, champions league spots and relegation.

Something needs to be done, although he seems to have conveniently ignored the fact that Carlisle also spent more than they had.

You're looking at bringing in far stricter FFP to force clubs to spend no more than they earn and greater penalties if they do. As has been said how many of the clubs overspending millions every year will vote for that?

Its why its ridiculous to talk of fan ownership. What club of the size of us or someone like Portsmouth will happily sit in L1 / L2 just to be fan owned. Everyone saw what happened with Portsmouth. Couple of seasons in the lower leagues and then they took the first offer they got with a promise to spend and get promotion.

I get what he is saying, that the clubs need to live within their means.

However the problem with the Bury and Bolton situations along with ourselves, Charlton and others are that, it is the fans who are punished and suffer from these points deductions and off-field shenanigans and the emotional distress of not knowing when their club will next play a game or starting the season on -12 before a ball is kicked.

It's the fans who are, more than anyone else, emotionally invested in their teams so the idea of banishing those clubs is punishing the fans who have no power despite being the most loyal.

From the business perspective I agree, but football clubs are much more than businesses and have a vital community role and those are the ones who're punished.

Once one mega-rich owner comes in and decides to splash the cash almost everyone else then has to to some degree and almost no-one truly lives within their means nowadays. And if the TV money went it could be carnage - we saw what happened after ITV digital and that was nothing like the PL.

I think it's arguably unwise for Pressley to say this as karma usually comes to bite you on the arse. He may one day end up at a club doing exactly the same, but would he be complaining if someone is bankrolling signings etc? Would he turn down a signing because he felt the club couldn't afford it even if the baord sign off on it?

It would be nice if they could somehow get owners to agree that putting clubs in danger ends in 10% of their personal fortune being taken for grassroots football or something. Never going to happen but it's the owners that need to be wary of punishment.

Make club directors guarantors on all players’ contracts. That would soon shore up the overspending on wages.

Really? I don't know him & never met him but I thought he came across as a fairly decent guy. Things went wrong at the end, but I thought he handled our move to Northampton pretty well given our circumstances.
