I have noticed many of the Coventry support saying that players can’t be talented if we are getting them on free transfers. Well this made me research into it and I found out some players who I believe are within Coventry’s Wage capabilities and would be good assets or key players for Coventry this season.
In Goalkeeping Positions, Caspar Ankergren is a free transfer at the moment. He maybe old but he has proved that he is a great keeper still with Leeds and is now a free transfer. I believe he would be a great back up for Westwood (If Westwood hopefully stays).
In Defence, We have already bought in two potentially good signings in O’Halloran and Keogh. Aidy Boothroyd has told the press he is after a Centre back and I looked into it and couldn’t find anyone who would suit Coventry on a free for this position. If Coventry were to spend money on a player I hope it would be Chris Morgan as he’s a great centre back with tonnes of Championship experience. Franck Queudrue was released at the end of last season by Birmingham and can play Centre back or full back. Lee Naylor is a left back who was released by Celtic who could be a good buy and also right back Bernard Mendy released by Hull. But I myself believe that we don’t need any more full backs and should give players like Jordan Clarke a chance.
In Midfield, there has been a lot of talent let go on frees. There are experienced players and potential players who have no club at the moment. If AB is looking for some Experience in Midfield, Lee Carsley, DaMarcus Beasley and George Boateng are all free transfers. Lee Carsley has done well for Birmingham and yes he has had injuries here and there but which players don’t? And when he plays he makes a difference. DaMarcus Beasley is a very skilful player and would be an asset to any team in our league. He’s light on his feet, he has played regularly for the USA and has made a difference with his agile structure and he’s not too old only just in his 30’s. If McIndoe has a season like he did last, I would put Beasley there any day. George Boateng would be great to see back at Coventry. He’s 34 now and still works his socks off which is why everyone respects him as a player and has still got ability to make a difference. If I was AB he would be among one of my top targets.
If we are looking for a younger winger then I would pick Hameur Bouazza who was released by Blackpool. He is at a good age of 25 and would give McIndoe good competition and maybe make McIndoe perform better. I don’t think he would be first team but I reckon he could be a good player to bring off the bench and make a difference. If we are looking for a player that is attacking minded from the midfield I have no doubt who Coventry should bring in, Robert Koren. Personally, He would be top of my wanted list if I was manager and would try and convince him to play for us. He has shown he can be a leader at the world cup as he captained Slovenia to a pretty impressive campaign, losing out of qualifying in England’s group in the very last minute. He also scored against Algeria showing he isn’t afraid to have a go and that’s what Coventry needs. He always seemed to want the ball at his feet and whenever he did he would create an attack.
For Strikers, Its either the Known Goal scorer in Marlon King who people seem to dislike because of his performance as a human being off the pitch, but that does not deny this guy could easily score 20 goals in a season and give Coventry a great chance of promotion or Coventry could take a chance on Trialist Orlando Smeekes, Who according to AB has been doing well. I think Orlando Smeekes is just going to be another Wayne Andrews if we sign him and not be at all good enough but I could be wrong.
I have said some names here but it doesn’t mean that I think I believe some of them will take Coventry forward, Just wanted to put some names into people’s heads that there is players out there that are free transfers and aren’t bad players as people seem to believe. If I was the manager my top 3 targets would be Robert Koren, DaMarcus Beasley and Marlon King as these players could be a part of a successful Coventry City team.
