Agree with that, BUT, I have seen refs in this competition have control, so it is not just all about FIFA.
If other refs had followed the example of the very good refs it would eradicate most of the problem anyway.
There HAVE been refs in this tournament that have had control.
Why have Colombia not behaved in the exact same manner in other games over there?
One game they had a player sent off within 3 minutes.
If they think they can get away with it they will, if they can't they won't.

1) This was their first (and thankfully only) knockout game
2) after the third min sending off (not for any underhand tactic remember) they couldn’t afford to possibly lose another.
3) After first game they won the other two. So no need to try and intimidate etc.
No ref in this World Cup has had to face the level of disruption as the guy last night. Yes he could and should have been a little tougher at the start (should have called falcao aside and read him the riot act as captain) but he would have been castigated by the authorities.
You cannot blame refs for the bad behaviour of teams....that is down to the players and coaches alone.
You cannot blame individual refs for the inadequacies of the governing body in not taking action on serial offenders.

Don't know what Southgate said to them at the half time extra time break, but it clearly worked. We found just a bit more steam, energy and zip and then should have won it ourselves.

I have seen refs go and talk to both sets of players and warn them that next time a penalty will be given or that a red card will be produced.

The headbutt incident, I would have liked him to have viewed that rather than take the word of VAR but we will never know and I suppose irrelevant. The only time Columbia stopped these antics was in extra time when they were on top of the game.
This is where FIFA do need to make an example of teams and support the refs. As much as I hate rugby there is a level of respect to the ref that cannot be challenged which needs to be instilled in football and that comes down to FIFA to do this. We all know this wont happen and this type of behaviour will continue and as a result I worry about the domestic game with VAR as we are going to see crowds of players swamp the ref on an ongoing basis week after week.

It will take a red card to sort this out (I believe there has only been one so far?) but I think how the refs are being briefed hasn't helped. I think with VAR FIFA have asked for some leniency around how this is managed on the pitch and the refs are paying the price. Columbia showed to respect to the ref last night but I think that was generally the exception to the teams in the WC. Our boys handled it very well, I was expecting a Alli 'bite' back at some point but they held their nerve and didn't get dragged into it. A few yellow cards could have really hurt us, even on the 'easy' side of the draw!!

Alli is playing too deep for me and also doesn't look 100% fit. His strength is getting beyond the striker or dropping off to link midfield and the strikers. He's not able to do either effectively from his deeper starting position. I'd drop Sterling and play Alli higher with Loftus Cheek in midfield against Croatia. Would play either Sterling or Rashford against the Swedes though as I think their pace will scare them.Yeah, was expecting Alli to react. He was barely in the game though.
I think Loftus-Cheek would have been a better option.
Colombia definitely were bending the rules like no other.
Needed a stronger ref. FIFA also need to sort themselves out though
