What I think that decision does show is the utter pointlessness of VAR. It's not a blatant elbow, you and I differ in our interpretation, so how on earth does it bring certainty in such a decision?

All it does is stall the game and stop the flow. Only thing you can say is it contrived a tense finish tonight!

You think not? I thought he clearly had nothing else on his mind other than to whack him. Even if it was a light touch, does intent count? Opinions eh?

You can be fouled with or without the ball.

I really don't think so. I thought he hurtled after him, tried to force himself in front for the ball (something that happens countless times during a game), happened to glance him very slightly... and the Iranian guy plunged to the ground as if shot.

Quaresma's challenge was rather worse!

You'd think Lawrenson would know that then... (Have to turn the sound down a bit when he commentates, but can still hear his rubbish comments.....)

But if a player makes a pass, then gets clattered, it's a foul, so he doesn't have to be "in control of the ball" to get a free kick. Lawro's argument was that ronaldo wasn't even in control of the ball, which is crap isn't it? Kane wasn't in control of the ball when he got a pen on Sunday.

Yeah, I am agreeing with you. Just football talk I think.

Was that the accidental knee in the bollocks?

The direct attack after he'd got the red mist up.

If Portugal could control themselves a bit better, mind, they've got a damned good chance of going far in this. Winners of the game v Uruguay to reach the semi-finals? The game v Uruguay to see at least four sent off?

A few interesting goals and tactics we are seeing at the moment. It wouldn't surprise me if some teams were trying to finish second in their groups on purpose in order to try and get an easier route to the final. I expect Russia thought they'd be one of them.

As for us, a draw and some yellow cards against Belgium is fine. They want to come second too by the sounds of their predicted team selection.

In the same way that we fancied Notts County and not Lincoln in the playoff semi-final, I think playing someone like Switzerland instead of Brazil or Germany is a complete no brainer.

I think we can beat any team on our day at the moment, and we will have that to get through later in the tournament. For now though, I see absolutely nothing wrong with being a bit cunning to get us to that point where we are within striking range.

As you say i reckon we beat anyone with the confidence we have at the moment. Any idea if yellow cards are forgotten after the group matches ?

Visited an infant school today. Gave them a jumper from one of my schools (Frederick Bird) and had a kick about for a while. They’re going draw some pictures and those that could speak English (some perfectly despite only being 5 and 6!) are writing some messages to the kids in Cov which the teacher will send over. Hoping it’s the start of something between the two schools and we stay in touch.

Fantastic work. Love it when this soft of thing goes on. Breaks down all sorts of preconceptions of people/nationalities etc. Top man

Excellent stuff CJ. Bet both you and kids had an unforgettable time and if those links between the schools can be developed then so many young kids will benefit.

Should Southgate make changes for Thursday night? Personally I would start with the same team as the Belgium game will be a massive test and both teams have momentum going into it . Although England probably have more

Be interesting. Wonder if we will go for full strength, but Belgium will rest players.

Entirely feasible.

Not sure what best here. I’m sure the heat has taken its toll. Have they all recovered or does Southgate think a couple need a rest? We are in the great position where the manager doesn’t really have to worry about the result. Yes would love a win but for once it’s not crucial.

I think we're going to make changes on Thursday. Southgate has indicated that players can get frustrated turning up and not getting a game so this is their time. Alexander-Arnold, Rose, Cahill, Dier & Rashford all to play.

I can see those changes happening, but which centre half would you drop out for Cahill?

I expect Belgium to do the smart thing and wait until they can see the layout of the last sixteen round before they decide whether they want to try to top the group.

I honestly think making changes for the sake of it could be detrimental for example if Belgium turn us over by 3 or 4 goals the confidence could be sapped from the squad

I'd definitely want to come second in the group the way it's going. Id make 10 changes and leave Harry Kane in.

Even though Denmark are sitting deep, France are making a case for keeping a strong line up atm

If it ain't broke don't fix it?
FIFA replacing the football's for the knockout stages.
Hope it's only the print and not the weight, elasticity etc.
World Cup 2018: New ball to be used for knockout stage

Seem to remember a reference to this some time back and it was questionable as to whether they'd have practised with the ball
Not sure If there's a practical difference between the two .
