Well, I'm sure in a few games time us England fans will have a sinking feeling, so maybe it's all very apt....

France v Australia - contentious
Iceland v Argentina - quality
Denmark v Peru - better than I thought
Croatia v Nigeria - simple win

Not the best game. No idea what the Nigerian defender was thinking, pure manhandling and just complete lunacy. Victor Moses just shocking. Going over far too easy. Pretty easy win for Croatia. I've been most impressed by Iceland today. A very tight unit, going to be very hard to beat. I think it's a bit disingenuous to label them underdogs, they're not a bad side and I think teams are going to get very frustrated playing them. Certainly made life very difficult for Argentina and kept Messi out of the game for the majority.

Hilarious. If Iceland were a team that played against us at the Ricoh you’d be the first to slag them off saying they “Park the bus” “boring cunts” “ruining the game” blah blah blah.

Sounds a nasty incident involving the Mexico fans having a taxi plough into them. According to BBC sports website, Russian Police say the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

We got that feeling. There were hundreds of English, Mexicans and Tunisians all connecting there and there were 3 people sat behind a small desk to check our paperwork.

Moscow border control were very efficient but also very thorough. Questioned me on every stamp in my passport and noticed there was one missing from when I went to Jamaica last year where the stamp was printed on the visa instead. Guessing it’s on their system everywhere our passports are used.

Slightly unfair, because this isn't League Two v League Two. Iceland are complete and total minnows, especially when alongside Argentina.

A world apart, though in the same competition.

If we played against a non league club a few divisions below in the cup I think we would be expecting them to be fighting for their lives in the same manner as Iceland.

I think us fans get miffed when teams play like in that 'non footballing' style, but when they obviously have the talent to play in a more positive manner.

Iceland have to play the way they play in order to compete.

Yeah, World Cup and both teams qualified for the same competition, but this, here in the finals is a whole different kettle of fish.

I think Iceland know their best chance is to frustrate teams, and try and catch them on a mistake. OK, they're probably not going to win a lot of games doing that. But if they can frustrate teams, and nullify the biggest threats, then they're probably not going to lose many either, in the group stage. I think they could beat Nigeria, and they did beat Croatia in qualifying. But they're recent results haven't been bad. They beat us at the Euro's, held Portugal to a draw, got through their group ahead of Croatia, nullified Argentina. It's obvious they're a very determined team, they work hard for each other.

They assemble whatever side they can scramble together from players who qualify to play for their nation.

A team in League Two playing negatively is usually doing so at the behest of the manager and he can assemble players and squad as he sees fit (obviously not in terms of how much he can spend, as that may well be restricted), but he can choose to go for players to fit whatever way he wants his team to play. He doesn't have the qualification issue.

I wouldn't say Accrington were negative. Other teams deliberately seemed to try and play non football.

I was wondering If Accrington flitted into that category then took into account the goal scorers.

Yeah. I didn't see Burton as non football either.

We have had teams come up here at the Ricoh though and seemingly not want to do anything other than disrupt and stop us playing, even though they appeared to have some decent players in their line ups.

Iceland knew their limitations and played a tactic according to their limited resources. They were never going to go toe to toe with the argies or England but frustrate them, make them commit extra bodies forward and hit them on the break. Not pretty but very effective and other teams could take a lot out of that game and replicate rather than trying to play attacking football and getting smashed

My wife flies Stanstead - Kishenev (Chisinau) when she visits her mum. She wasn't surprised when I told her what you said about all the foreign visitors going to Moscow. She reckons it's always like that because it's the cheapest route. I hate the drag from Dorset to Stanstead and back.

In the end teams play to a a style the manager deems is the most effective.

Wycombe for some reason seem viewed with disdain on here but the method was effective

Iceland are the World Cup equivalent of the Crazy Gang

I don't think Iceland are in a position to choose their tactics to much of a degree, as they have such a small pool of players to select from, whereas as a club side here in England can and the manager can mould his squad into how he wishes his team to play the game.

I would think now that you could watch every Iceland international game now for the next 20 years and they will play in the same manner.

Any manager there has so little to choose from.

That’s rubbish. A manager can do whatever he wants. He okay any formation he wants. According to you teams in the same league can’t they have to play some kind of entertaining football. No they don’t. If you assemble a squad which has power and strength and brute force you play in that style. You sound like a premier league manager of a big club who complains when a club goes to their ground to spoil the game but praises a team who plays 4-2-4 and gets stuffed.
