Wingy,

As promised second account of my away fans experience.

Premier League 1991/1992 Season away to the Vile 1st May 1992

Alan and Paul two brothers and good friends of mine convinced me that it would be a good idea to see the Sky Blues play Aston Vile at Vile park as it was the last game of the season and one we had to win because if Luton could beat Notts County away and we lost we would be DOWN !!!

Now Alan was always almost incoherent at that time when talking about our near neighbours - he hated them with a vengeance - probably compared to the Fester of today.

Anyway eight of us in two cars travelled event free to the slip road off the M6 about twenty minutes walk from the ground parked and then sauntered towards Vile Park.

To say there was an "atmosphere" surrounding our journey to the ground was an understatement as we passed several pubs which were very hostile to away fans and we were subject to constant heckling and threats on the way arriving at the ground about thirty minutes before kick off.

On arrival there was plenty of room to stand in relative comfort about twenty yards from the pitch behind the goal and three layers of advertising hoardings.

About ten minutes later ir began to get a bit claustrophobic with an ever increasing volume of grinning Vile fans pointing and gesturing towards us (and getting closer) - it didn't look very healthy to me.

After looking more closely at where we were standing in relation to the ground layout I suddenly realised where we were - Al, I said, forgive me if I am a tad wrong here but isn't this part of the HOLTE END !!! - sure it is he said the away tickets were sold out, anyway it will be OK trust me.

One minute to kick off, tension mounting and before I could say Alan wtf is going on there was an almighty roar and about 300 yam yams were charging towards us aiming to maim and kill.

Totally outnumbered we turned heel rather quickly we legged it towards the pitch battering down the hoardings like at the Grand National hotly pursued by frothing Vile cretins.

The chase continued up the touchline whilst the teams were just about to kickoff.

We made it to the halfway line and dived headlong into the safety of the stands but horror of horrors at the same time their Centre Forward other wise known as big Cyrille Regis rose like a leaping salmon and planted the perfect header into the top corner - AFTER JUST ONE MINUTE OF PLAY - I was still on the floor of the stand at the time trying to commandeer a seat and missed it.

Anyway we eventually lost 2-0: Regis (1), Yorke (36), Gate 31,984, and because Notts County beat Luton 2-1 we didn't go down (one of many many escapes) but Luton did.

HAPPY DAYS

Yes Wingy I get your inference - probably the same colour as "that" away kit of many years ago.

I was with the City fans in the corner, so I would have seen you lot scarpering out of the Holte!

We were toothless and deserved to be relegated - didn't even have a shot on target.

It was a miracle Notts County getting those late 2 goals, from an undergraduate triallist if I remember correctly.

Some of the City players came over to applaud us at the end, but for once I couldn't applaud them back - they had been so abysmal.

It was a Coventry born player who scored the winner for Notts County that day.

Agreed, wingy - we stayed up thanks to the Stoke GK who was immense against Fester.

Carlo Nash I believe. I remember listening to the Leicester game on the radio. Felt paralysed. Couldn't do anything.

Johnny, you'll never believe this but I was also in the Holte End that day with my Dad! And I remember you guys legging it past!! The atmosphere was VERY hostil, I kept my mouth shut the whole game and just watched this one bloke shouting for 90 minutes how he was going to kill some "Cov Scum" after!! I was 10!! Didn't Notts County score late too? I'm sure we were still going down towards the end of the game?

Let's hope whoever it was used his fist. If so I know from personal experience that his hand probably hurt more and for longer than your head. The head is harder than the fist.

I was in the Witton Lane Stand with a couple of mates, we we're clocked as Cov fans within seconds of entering the ground, probably due to the fact we we're naive drunk teenagers, I had a knife pressed into my throat by a vile scumbag and thought my time was up, as this happened the lads ran out of the Holte End, I attempted to escape and jump in with the Cov fans my plan was scuppered by a Brummie copper who pushed me back into the Witton Lane, I complained about the maniac with the knife but the brummie c**t laughed you've made your bed now fucking lie in it!
