Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has stressed the squad is ready to attack the 2013/14 League One season.

After an intense pre-season, including a tour of Holland, City face Crawley at the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday in the first game of the new season.

The squad played four pre-season matches last week against Cheltenham, Fleetwood, Mansfield and Oxford before this week's match preparation training.

Pressley believes the fitness levels, the positional organisation and the team mentality are 'exactly where they should be' going into Saturday's game.

The Scot said: "It is no secret that there have been a number of off-field issues surrounding the club this summer.

"But the players have always remained very focused and we are exactly where we should be. Their attitude throughout the pre-season has been excellent and I have been delighted with the work.

"We have all worked very hard over the summer to deliver the best possible result going into the new season.

"A high percentage of the squad are Academy players and with that brings a real belonging to the club. Many of the players have come through that system together and that has helped develop a stronger unity which is a great thing to have."

Having seen two different sides play in the four pre-season matches last week, there is great competition in midfield. Conor Thomas, John Fleck, Adam Barton, Franck Moussa, Carl Baker and Billy Daniels are all vying for a first-team spot after impressive performances during pre-season.

The City boss added: "Our midfield players have all excelled during pre-season and with the likes of Louis Garner and Leon Lobjoit coming into the fold, there is a lot of competition.

"It makes my life as a manager difficult in selection issues like this but I would rather it be that way. I want pressure all over the park so everyone works to reach their top levels.

"I am really looking forward to the start of the season as that first game is always exciting. Our away support last season was magnificent, they were our back-bone away from home.

"I am sure they will travel in huge numbers again this season. We desperately need them to continue that away support as if we are going to come through this, we are going to have to come through it together."

Reminds me of that Monty Python knight who was still game for a fight even after losing both arms and legs.
I admire your spirit Pressley but face it, Coventry City Football Club is on the verge of extinction.

Good job he has competition for midfield places - any injuries or sendings off for our forward or defenders and he'll need those competitors to fill the gaps...

I hate to say but survival should be our only target this year but even this maybe a step to far.

Pre-season makes no difference if the squad is not good enough

SP says our fitness is excellent,
shame we still can't hit the target with any shot.no Centre halves, only relying on Dick Barton, and Bruce Willis
