Brian Reade on Coventry: Owners' plans to ground-share at Northampton is saying Cobblers to the fans

Back in the late Seventies, I sent myself to Coventry for four blissful years.

It should have only been three, but I managed to spin out the student hedonism the way you could in the good old days, without fear of debts or missed rungs on career ladders.

They were good days for watching football too.

Coventry were a proper top-flight club, playing in a proper, atmospheric ground called Highfield Road (I even saw an FA Cup semi-final there, and still curse Arsenal’s Brian Talbot to this day).

My best mate was at Nene College, Northampton, but I only visited him three times, as the 35-mile, mostly A-road, bus trip felt like the inspiration for Chris Rea’s Road To Hell.

Well, from next month, anyone from Coventry wishing to see their beloved City play their home games, might have to make that hellish trip after the venture-fund owners SISU, who refuse to pay the rent to the Ricoh stadium owners, ACL, seek a ground-share with Northampton Town.

Although, with the vast majority of their desolate fans promising to boycott the move, at least the route won’t be busy.

Oh how, as John Sillett has been tearfully lamenting, the once (almost) mighty have fallen.

A 130-year-old club, recently in the top flight for 34 years, in the ninth biggest city in England, is in administration, with no ground and no future.

Other than to play before a handful of fans in a 7,600 stadium, in a faraway town, as unrepentant owners talk about building a new ground, without a location, *planning permission or money.

Non-League obscurity beckons.

Coventry’s story is a truly sobering one for all football fans, even though parts of it will be familiar to many.

It goes *something like this:

As football enjoys its post-Sky era boom, an “ambitious” board decides to cash in on their inner-city home, conveniently deemed “too costly to redevelop”.

So, a potential corporate killing is made, moving to a new stadium on the city outskirts with “better motorway links” that will allow them to compete with “the best in the land”.

But the cash cow is a mirage, the club’s soul disappears, along with attendances, the ground becomes unaffordable and they fall into administration.

Saviours in the form of hedge-fund capitalists snap the club up for a pound, promising a bright future when all they’re after is a huge profit from selling it on.

But they can’t because their asking price is too high, the club, like the world economy is in the doldrums, and what follows is a war involving another bankruptcy, new owners (who are the old ones under a different guise), the local council, stadium owners, rival bidders, and administrators as the club is dragged to its knees.

Meanwhile, the Football League looks on, unable or unwilling to administer a genuine Fit and Proper Persons ownership test.

Where, in this woeful tale, is the vigilance, stewardship and *direction from the Football League, whose motto is “Real Football, Real Fans”?

Can they explain to Coventry fans how they allowed their club to become such a sorry mess?

Or do they prefer, like the other guilty parties, to blame someone else and say “Cobblers” to fans’ complaints about being exiled to Northampton?

I’m on a panel at an event today (organised by BOSS magazine and a group called STAND Against Modern Football), asking how fans can make their voices heard in protest at what is being done to their game.

My advice to Coventry fans is simple: Take inspiration from your city’s most famous protester and do a Lady Godiva.

On the day of the first home game, strip naked and ride on horses (or bikes) into the city centre, bringing it to a standstill, with the names of the companies or individuals you deem *responsible for your shocking plight covering your naughty bits.

Name them, shame them and make global news.

At the very least, your city, SISU, ACL, the administrators, the Football League and the nation will understand what your football club means to you.

First I was going to ignore reading this, thinking it's only The Mirror (a comic and not even a funny comic). But I'm desperate as we all are for some hope. And he shut me up. He got it right. Even going so far as to shame the Football League. History, status in the football world, a decently located old ground that could have easily been redeveloped etc. etc. The conclusion of his article was jokey but I got the point. Well done The Mirror. Never thought I'd ever say those words.
Thing is, I'm waiting for all the young Turks out there who will get fired up about this and do something. I'm thinking the Shankley thing in Liverpool. Fans United and making an impact. Thing is we don't seem very together do we? The bit in the article about non league obscurity really worries me. I've been watching the City since the late 1950s, so my barricade days are probably past - so where are all the young dudes to kick up a storm?

What ever we do, it has to be a massive show of strength.
If you are a supporter of the Sky Blue Trust or not we should all get behind one voice, show strength and unity.

So many of us have just buried our heads in the sand and thought this would go away.

The FL has to see how many fans are against this.

We need a massive show of hands and embarrass SISU.

We need someone with some media exposure to pull it together and ensure we get the right coverage.

I'll have to go for Geoffrey Robinson to cover mine, sure that some can get by with Sisu or Ray!

We do indeed need a massive show of hands.

The suggested protest would I'm sure get nationwide media coverage. Lets do it. Count me in. Any others?

I blame 'Mayfair based hedge fund SISU and associated businesses'. That should cover it.

That has been the problem for a long time. This has been brewing for about 15 years yet so many have refused to criticise the club/owners, only criticising those who point out whats happening. So many have been labelled as "trouble makers" or "not real fans" for just pointing out what was happening.

Even now we still see it in some, from the selfish "I just want to watch football" brigade, to the well meaning but (in my opinion) misguided "the lads still need our support" lot. I'm sorry but right now I couldn't give a toss about the players feelings, they are far down the list of priorities. The club is disappearing, and stopping that should be paramount to all.

Can't imagine the fans of say Leeds being so timid as we have been about all the sad events unfolding at our club.
Where's the BIG ACTION? Some voices are there but they get the 'jokey' responses, attempted 'witty' replies. Bigfatron is spot, we are divided and clueless. The younger element among our support need to step up.

Sisu won't go until they want to go, no matter of screaming, shouting or "direct action" will change that.

They don't give a toss about the club or it's fans, that should have been clear since they took over, even more so now.

Lord,
I believe you are totally correct in your above statement.
That is why we, as fans, have to make as much noise as possible to make other bodies than CAN change what is going on take action.

Too busy trying to get work to kick up a storm. The only thing that will get SISU out is money and lots of it.

You're spot on, they won't leave until they ate ready, but surely its our job to make sure they understand they are not welcome. The last thing their investors want is to have their good name dragged through the media.

I liked an idea I read on GMK the other day, somebody suggested a tour of smaller local clubs on home game days.

I think it's pretty pointless protesting outside empty office blocks / stadia... They should be held in cov city centre

Colin 1883 is right. A MASSIVE gathering in Broadgate would be highly visible. I'm talking a few thousand please. Very soon. At the weekend. No organising it, just be there at a given time.
You don't need permission to stand in your own city centre. So that's me and Colin....

The thread is about protests being too small, the general opinion is they haven't been organised and promoted properly and your response to that is to have a protest very quickly and not organise it, you don't think you are falling into the exact same trap?

Noggin, Broadgate, weekend afternoon. What is there to organise? Too much faffing about, nothing done.
