Football, and watching football in particular, is a pastime that relies on hope. The only reason any of us goes is because they have hope. Hope that things aren’t as bad as they seem; hope that you might not lose; hope that you might score hope that you might even – dare I say it – win. Ordinarily, the absence of long-term hope can be masked by short-term relief: a last minute winner, an opposition’s missed penalty.
I feel we’re past that point.
