Has anyone seen this exhibit at the Herbert?

Thoroughly recommend it. It's a piece by a street artist called Pahnl.

Really, really amusing.

'Witty, sometimes factual and often a little bit subversive, A History of Us takes visitors on a wry journey through the (sort of) history of the human race, starring a riot of tiny, graphic people.

Spray painted with stencils and offering an unconventional view of the past, this is our history as seen through the eyes of street artist Pahnl.

From primal prehistory, to the pyramid-building Egyptians, the proud Romans, the dim Dark Ages, the industrious Victorians, and the World Wars that followed, the exhibition hurtles toward life today and onwards to a speculative future.

Look out for the dawning of inventions like the wheel, pointy swords, alcohol, politicians, electricity bills, flight and predictive text.

Pahnl has been painting tiny people and animals for over 10 years and this is his biggest challenge to date. His 44-metre long miniature history of humanity tells a fascinating story about our past, our love of discord and progress, and what the future (maybe) holds for the human race.'

'A History Of Us' is a solo show on at The Herbert gallery between 13th June and 4th October. In short, we spray painted a timeline of humanity onto 44 metres of wall, presenting famous discoveries, notable people and important inventions. The timeline begins from the big bang and dinosaurs, runs through the stone age full of cavemen, onwards to the egyptians in the bronze age, greeks and romans in the iron age, on to the dark ages filled with knights and inventors, followed by the flourishing modern ages, to contemporary times and then speculating on what the future might hold!

This show has been two years in the making and was stenciled directly onto the gallery walls using 1,107 stencils in the space of nine days! The amount of research, drawing, writing, revising, cutting, organizing and spraying that has gone into producing 'A History Of Us' is obscene.
Each of the 282 entries in the timeline has it's own caption. Some of the captions are the truth, some are outright lies and others are a mix of the two. The exhibition is on for three and a half months and is totally free, so if you're in the area, you should absolutely pop in for this and to check out the rest of their spaces. There are also a number of screen prints available here that were released as part of the show.

Really, really worth anyone's time, this I would say. Filled with really amusing little quips, such as talking about the bombing of Coventry Cathedral being pretty much a deliberate ploy to enable us to sit out on benches sunning ourselves and that the invention of scissors meant we could finally play the game of rock, paper, scissors we had been urgently waiting for.

Every pic has a caption and everyone has an amusing line or quip.

Loved it so much I am going to go back and read every single timeline.

The Evolution of Can. There is also Velociraptor vs Hitler (can't find the print).
