I saw Nilsson at an ex players night and blamed injuries If i recall correctly. Said the chairman promised him at least 1 new player in the last half of the season and it was going to be Ginola. Then I think a combination of him not wanting to drop to the champ and the chairman not being proactive we kept losing and the transfer dragged on for weeks and never happened.

I vaguely remember the Ginola rumour. We were comfortably top 6 until the last 8 games if i recall… then lost like 6 of them

On reflection, that team should have gone straight back up.

Thompson’s sale derailed us a bit, but all I recall of that season was frightening inconsistency.

If i remember correctly (which is unlikely)....... we started pretty well and were generally tipped as favourites.

We had a home game against Norwich who were also up there, and had we won we'd have had a significant early season gap at the top, and i think would have kicked on to promotion.

However Norwich equalised late on and we got dragged back down into the pack and it fell apart from there.

Stockport County - Coventry City, 11/08/2001 - First Division (- 03/04) - Match sheet

This is the match sheet of the First Division (- 03/04) game between Stockport County and Coventry City on 11/08/2001.

Larcus Hall rather than Laul Hall going by this. Surprised to see Shefqi Kuqi in the Stockport team, for some reason I thought he was playing much more recently than that

Does anyone know who the 'we'll be back' chap is and if he's still around? Need to see him at a game with an updated sign if he is!

I was very young at the time but signing Lighbourne and Howarth, is that now like the equivalent of signing mid 20 year olds from league 2?

I don't see this team as starting the journey back i.e. the team at the front of this thread started the journey to L2 and near oblivion. For me the team that started the journey back was the L2 promotion team.

I remember Jean Guy Wallemme having a mare in the following match at home to Wolves too & barely playing afterwards

Remember we lost 1-5 at home to Newcastle and Shearer absolutely ragged him.

Thompson wasn't sold in that season. Carsley was and that's what derailed us.

I don't think there has been a team relegated since with such a long unbroken top flight stay.

Southampton had 26 years. Villa had 27 years.
