Is off, City pulled the plug at the last minute.

Same source tells me that Rob Jones of Sheffield Wednesday and Billy Paynter of Leeds Utd are both in talks with the club and are very close to completing a deal, apparently we are just waiting for Richard Wood to move on, he's the highest paid player.

Some people will doubt this but I am being 100% honest, time will tell.

I suspect Paynter could do a job with a change of scenery, despite Leeds fans being pretty uniformly on his back. I would rather have Richard Wood than Rob Jones, but I guess that one would all come down to finances.

Paynter is a proven goalscorer at this level.

But do we think he'll make a good impression?

Not sure how much truth there is in this but really hate it when I see the "there rubbish" comments on this forum before they've even played a game for us.

No interested in Chris Porter whatsoever, had his hayday at motherwell a few years back and is way past it now. As for Billy Paynter, I seriously think that given the chance in league one he really could be good along side a poacher like Cody. Never been given a fair chance at championship level IMO and is a proven goal scorer in league one as shown with Swindon a few years back.

Never really seen Rob Jones play but i know he's a big lurch.

I would welcome both these - Jones could be the real on the field leader we have lacked since Wise - not the most skilful or quickest but totally committed, brave and leads by example. Paynter had a nightmare at Leeds but is a proven goalscorer at Div 3 level and could well do a job alongside Cody. And we would probably be saving a lot in wages when Wood leaves even if these two sign. Another high earner off the wage bill.

Eastwood was a proven scorer at L1 level!

Sound like 2 average squad players possibly, but fairly reliable considering most of our additions are relative gambles.

This sounds oddly plausible.

Eastwood was a different case to you're average player, more interested in his horses than the back of the net. Also, Eastwood played in the championship, Paynter would be playing back in his 'comfort zone' if you like, which Eastwood didn't get to do for us.

Incidentally, it was a far superior pun to the Dale Winton one I saw earlier. That was one of your very worst. I am aware of the magnitude of my statement.

Paynter? Can anyone give me a portrait of this guy? It's a bit abstract at the moment!

Firstly I doubt whether we were in for Porter in the first place AND that we're interested in Jones or Paynter as these players have been linked to us before and it is probably recycled garbage.
