I missed that wingy, who was on? I do listen to quite a lot of comedy on there as it goes, so could always check on the iplayer tomorrow. I'll need a laugh if we get a bad announcement!

Ah thought you meant the radio-yes, I was watching that, brilliant! I'm half-Mancunian by blood..he's a total bloody hero

Nice anecdote from my elderly ST buddy who features elsewhere on here tonight in the Thatcher/Grave-dance story.

He used to work for Granada TV back in the late 70's and early 80's, but before that was working at a college up there-Salford I think. He was sat waiting at traffic lights one day on his way into work when suddenly, the passenger door opened, and this straggle-haired stranger stood there. It was John Cooper Clarke, and he asked my mate "are you going to the college?" My mate said in his usual rather-sophisticated manner, "I am as a matter of fact-would you like a lift?" Turns out Clarke was teaching some classes there, and he'd clocked my mate and recognised him-my mate had no idea who the hell he was at first!

So began an unlikely friendship, and my mate would pick him up every day by the lights and give him a lift in. You'd think they are completely different from looking at them, but they have a lot in common. The Thatcher bit when they were talking about Manchester and Liverpool in the 80's made me chuckle, as it's almost word for word what I've had my mate argue to me about those times! And even more so when he was talking tonight about how "Shakespeare wrote his words for actors to perform, not for people to read: poetry is meant to be heard!". Well my mate is a devout lover of Shakespeare-but in particular, at the theatre!

I have my own vivid way of picturing the reality of Beasley Street: my mum went to Uni in Salford. All she really told me about it that I can remember was "it was horrible...I got home one day and there was a dead cat on the door-step".

One of my best mates grew up in Salford and worshipped him, said he couldn't believe it when he moved down here as a teenager and nobody had heard of him. One of those great lost under-rated geniuses. I put Mark E Smith of The Fall in a similar class, but John is undoubtedly a much nicer bloke than him!
