This forum cracks me up; reminds me of the banter in the old days before the match at the Brewer with my Dad, my brother and about 30 mates and the odd away fan who dared. Actually it reminds me more of the banter after the game - the more beers the more it sounded like this forum. Anybody else used to drink there ? Great pork and apple sauce rolls and a pool table right in the middle of the crowded bar; a real football pub

cracking pre match pub. Had some great times in there.
I used to work in Whitley and there were a few of us used to go there straight from work for mid week games. We'd be in there for 4ish and have a right session before the game.
Never bought a razor from a shop for years, used to get them off the smack heads in there.

Good old days, I bet most of the boozers around there have shutdown now.

Weekends in there were always lively. A few of us would do a pub crawl, start off in the Elastic,on to the Forresters, then to the Beer Engine to watch a band, then wobble to the Brewer and Baker for a late one. Great boozer full of characters !

We used to start in the dead horse by the Barras chippy - proper spit and sawdust pub - the same people were in there when we got back after the match just more pissed

One of the many great things about Highfield Road were the working class boozers in the area. No plastic trees or A la Carte dining, just a place to enjoy a pint and discuss how great we were. I remember going into the Humber Hotel and asking for a beer mat, to which the barmaid replied ‘What the f—- do you think this is, The Leofric’ ?

Great place for a pre match drink, you could drink up when the teams came out and be in your seat before kick-off.

We used to go Flying Standard, Forresters, Brewer and Baker, then possibly Binley Oak.

Brewer and Baker was certainly "unique"

One of things I missed out on as a kid being a Coventry exile, most home games like now, turn up, watch thevganecand go home. Guess that's why I've always loved away games so much when we could get on it all day.

Used to live right by the Vauxhall Tavern. Used to go in the Brewer & Baker before the match to play pool. Pretty sure it was 20p a game.

I'm 36 now. Feel like I missed out just on the pre match boozing at HR. Would have loved to have done Gosford Street pre game, seemed to be full of pubs when I was a kid.

I was a regular before and after game. Wonderful Times.

Does the Brew it still exist? Was it still open before vivid? Sorry out of touch having left Coventry in 98. Gosh to be younger, drinking with good mates and watching Sky Blues when we were fairly good, I really miss those days.

Loved the Vauxhall in the 80’s always a good pub to ambush the away fans in the police escort after the game!!

The Vauxhall Tavern has been converted to student accommodation, so has the Brewer and Baker.

The Binley Oak was a nursery for a while, but it is now a fireplace business. The fireplace business has a bit on their website about the history of the pub that mentions the football club.

Wasnt old enough to drink in the HR days, was 15 when we left, but always remember the Rose and Crown, the Old Ball, the Hastings (think they let away fans in?) And stoke ex club being heaving before matchdays.

Grew up on Hamilton Road just off ball hill. Would leave my door at 2.50 get to the west terrace for the teams coming out. Great days

Old Ball was the nominated away fans pubs but you'd regularly get fans in the above.

I can remember when loads of Geordies were in the Rose and Crown, dancing on the tables and generally being complete nauses, Was the same game that the vast majority of their support sang "Town full of P***S".

I've hated Geordies ever since.

Also, remember a couple of cars full of Scousers getting lairy in the Pippin after one game but swiftly found out there was plenty of people in there who would happily entertain them so they wound their necks in. Were pretty sound after that.

I don't care what anyone says the whole "football experience" was much, much better at Highfield Road.

Likewise, I went to just a handful of top flight games plus a friendly and losing to Charlton in the cup. Last one was losing to Everton 3-1 and my dad hauled us out because he was too pissed off to watch.

I ended up seeing quite a few of the relegation season as we knew we probably wouldn’t be top flight for a while after. When I was 8 a friend of mine’s dad wangled a box at Highbury and we got to meet players afterwards but wasn’t the same. Particularly watching a certain Kanu instead of Dion
