Regardless of our current position I have always considered the "play offs" unfair. After a long season a team finishing third could lose out on promotion to a team finishing sixth based on the result of one game. After 46 games this has been unfair in my opinion. The team finishing third should go up automatically. Now, being selfish, I welcome the play offs unless we finish third and lose in a final to the team finishing sixth!

Whether fair or not though, since it's introduction the play-offs have made things so much more exciting.

Previously, if three teams were well clear at the top with a month to go, the season would be over for more than half the teams in the division.

Someone however did came up with a brilliant twist on the play-offs to make it fairer and the FL should totally embrace that I feel.

At the moment it is two legs, 4th v 5th and 3rd v 6th, with the winning two teams meeting in the final.

This new fairer proposition notion was:

6th play 5th.

Winner of that to play team finishing 4th.

Team winning that to play the team finishing 3rd.

Therefore the team finishing 6th and 5th would have to win 3 games to win the promotion, the team in 4th would have to win 2 games to win promotion and the team in 3rd, just the 1 game to win promotion.

With this system the teams in 3rd and 4th are rewarded appropriately.

The Premiership want changes to the format now I see the end of straight three down and three up to something like two down and the one finishing second bottom going into the play-offs or even top of championship v bottom of the Prem. From next season relegated premiership clubs lose a minimum 100 million that's serious wedge !

They do this in scotland, cant see any changes to the Premier League any time soon though, it works too well as a product as it is.

I would say money more than entertainment. More games, more TV revenue, a big Wembley final. I'd much prefer to go back to 3 up 3 down.

You need to send that to the FL
After you have secured intellectual property rights first of course.

Not my idea.

Someone suggested it on 5 Live a couple of years back. I would assume they sent it to the FL and it is still in the pending tray.

If I remember correctly the play-offs started something like that with potential relegation and promotion teams playing each other.

Yes I though that as well, maybe it was only for one or two seasons?
