COVENTRY CITY'S vice chairman John Clarke has shouldered his share of the blame for Coventry City’s slump into League One.

Last March, the millionaire who apparently has not invested any of his own money in the club sat alongside Ken Dulalley, Len “text a sub” Brody, Paul “no clout” Clouting and Onye Igwe (random Nigerian bloke) and declared them the most impressive board that he had seen in his 25 years at the club.

But at the weekend, when confronted with the blindingly obvious, he finally admitted that perhaps he had got it wrong.

“I said at the time it was the best board I’d known in terms of skill sets and on paper it was,” he said, “but I am a fucking clueless twat who will say anything in return for a plate of scotch eggs and a pint of mild...

“There is a case for saying, without naming any names, that we’ve had a right twat on the board who took it upon himself to sit next to Andy and the coaching team in the dugout.

"Yes, I do take some responsibility, but since Tim came on board as chief executive in December we’ve had no more changes in chief executive which clearly means we have reached a point of stability and I am not quite sure how my responsibility has anything to do with Tim but hey ho ... you’re not recording this conversation are you?

“It’s been very tough, with lots of sleepless nights, but then I never sleep well after scoffing a plate of scotch eggs.

Clarke underlined the depth of City’s current financial problems when he recalled: “When I was on the board in 1993 the overdraft was £5million. With the help of me, past and current board members we have managed to burn nearly £125m over 15-16 years which I think you would all agree is money well spent.

“We’ve got a huge task over the summer to sell tickets but the two key principles of the current team – and it’s very small – are (1) tell as many lies as we can to persuade fans to buy season tickets and (2) SISU comes first.

“People remember the dreadful time when we were relegated from the Premier League and we are very much hoping that they will fail to remember the dreadful time when we were relegated from the Championship.

“It can be difficult when you are relegated and grieving to start taking about positives because it can be misinterpreted as simply trying to con the fans into buying season tickets.

“But I was talking to the Doncaster chairman and they are looking at it positively because their fans are complete mugs just like ours.

"I wouldn’t like to call it an opportunity because it isn’t but hey I am trying to sound positive as Tim told me to be upbeat.

“We have done it before and we have to show the same unity, determination and vision we had in the days of Bryan Richardson and Geoffrey Robinson. Treat the fans with scorn.”
