The 1968 Sky Blue (1 Viewer)

Here is a picture of Bobby Gould in the 1967 version of our Sky Blue. This game was in the first half of the season as we were promoted in 1967. I’ve never seen this picture before putting Bobby Gould 1967 into Google. Shows him at Highbury against Terry Neil. I always liked those chunky blue and white tops to the socks.

I would suggest this photo is from the early seventies. Both of the photos represent the Sky Blue of the period.

None of the photos posted so far look like the “right” colour to me. Definitely don’t go by the historicalkits.co.uk web page, which gives a very misleading impression.

Just a thought - I reckon the retro kit we used in the relegation season 2011-12 was pretty faithful to the 1960s colour. Why not see if you can get hold of one of those shirts?

If you want to use an image there’s a problem – printed photos, scanned images and phone/computer screens are all subject to huge variations in the way they represent colours. So even if we all remembered the same and agreed on how the kit looked (unlikely), it would be impossible to represent the colour reliably to you over the web. And translating it accurately into your paint job would be another problem.

With all the above caveats, my recollection of the kit in the 1960’s is much closer to the images attached. Notice that in photo “a”, the socks are different from the rest of the kit – they have that greenish tinge which is more like the strip from earlier in the 60s I think. Whisper it quietly around here, but the first sky blue wasn’t necessarily a very nice colour!

God there are some great players in those 60’s pics, and happy memories. Viewers of a nervous disposition may not want to look at the 2011 one though.

You remember the colour the old invalid carraiges were.......

If you are getting the paint especially made you might be able to give them an RGB code and have it mixed. I've used ColourPick Eyedropper on a few of the pictures and come up with the RGB code of 201,223,247 which looks pretty close (don't shoot me if you remember it differently!!).

Good game this!
I like the online RGB to Pantone tool, and after playing around I reckon 215,239,247 is much nearer to the mark. But nobody knows for sure what is authentic, and of course you also have to LIKE the colour if you are going to be living with it every day.

Is a bit darker, but still nice!

The 68 kit was my first sort of replica I wore at school games lessons. As a 10 year old from Essex who'd never been north of Watford, it started my 50 year passion for the City. I loved the originality and brightness and got my mum to dye an all white cotton shirt and shorts sky blue and because the socks were nylon, they came out almost dark blue. She finished it off with sowing strips from my sisters navy blue knickers around the colour and cuffs and there I was job done. It wasn't until the 80's that I managed to get 'north' to highfield road and see the sky blues in the flesh, but even in deafeat the 2 hour door to door drive was always worth it. I love the friendliness of the people and the never die attitude.The sky blues truly have some of the best supporters in the country.
