2m x 22mm pipe is £18 at B&Q

yeah but B&Q are expensive. They use to sell 2m x 15mm for £9. when you could get 3m x 15mm for just under £5 at the merchants. About 3-4 years ago I know the scrap price was 2k a tonne.

B & Q aren't that expensive anymore. I bought some from Screwfix recently and it was a similar price.
