The manager isn't against playing youngsters
Sam McCallum was a surprise choice when the incumbent left back at the time was a fan's favourite
It's mostly to do with the personality shown in training with the first team squad
Many young players are quiet when they move into the senior squad. It's those that immediately look comfortable and as though they belong there that are more likely to get a chance

Yes to be fair I remember during the l1 promotion season robins started playing mccallum and I thought mason was better, but in the end mccallum showed his quality

I can kind of see the Nuddy comparison a little as he is perhaps unpredictable, mainly due to rawness, but for me Stern John comes to mind a bit. His movement suggests that all he wants to do is score goals: whilst everyone else was running in, he dropped off into space and jockeyed in anticipation of the ball coming out to him, I liked Robins pointing out that he'd found more space in 2 mins than our other strikers had all game. And that was a bit of a Stern shot! If he's half as good as him we've got a bargain.

I still can’t tell what kind of player he is yet tbh. Doesn’t look like a Stern John to me at all. Still think he could just as easily be another Alex Nimely, but the more he makes me look silly on here the better!

In the 10 seconds from the moment of Hamer's free-kick delivery and Tavares scoring, Tavares moved his feet 22 times. It isn't just A to B pace that's important, it is the quickness of feet adjustment that can make a difference. Not to mention the finish.

Even before then, he was constantly at it. Moving between defenders and looking for a run.

Yeah I doubt he's ready to start games and be the main man. Last 20 minutes when chasing a game against tired defenders? Yes.

Yeah

I still think any negativity towards robins for not using him may well prove to be the biggest nonsense. His confidence may be completely down to the way robins has managed the whole of it

Robins has earned the right to be trusted

Are you saying he wouldn’t have buried that in the top corner with the last kick of the game?

Are you still pretending it was a robins master stroke?

Part of the irony is Tavares was only on because they'd spent so much time kicking lumps out of O'Hare he had to go off.

Not that decision no. Just how the lad has been handled. Not sure anyone but Tavares deserves any credit for the movement touch and finish just stunning

People say he's an inexperienced forward, but that's the finish of an experienced player. He drops back into a space where you'd expect a headed clearance to land, brings the ball under control with utmost composure, and those quick feet to find the space when the defenders closing him down. And that's ignoring the finish.
Agree. A very cool, composed finish like Bagan at Cardiff the other day against us. We need to give these so-called kids a chance. They’ll sometimes show the older, wiser and more experienced players how to seize these opportunities and not rush into a botched attempt. Think it’s because they have nothing to lose and can play with freedom.

Bit of credit for JCS too, cleverly blocked defender from getting to Tavares quicker.

A Sunday morning reality check is required.
Yes he scored a great goal, yes he took up a great position and looked the part.
But the lad is raw as f#%k and needs careful handling by MR.
I dont expect him to get any game time away at Swansea, but I can see him getting 20 or 30 minutes at an upcoming home game before Godden returns.
And maybe a good runout before the end of the season if we play any "dead rubber games" in preparation for being in the mix next season.
Might not be a bad idea bringing him on the in the second half versus Swansea who usually play a very high line at the back. His pace could be a problem for tired legs.

To be fair Ponticelli did that too, and also scored a couple of opportunistic goals. Unfortunately for him when MR brought him on in games he often played Ponticelli in deeper lying wide positions which really didn't suit him. Hopefully Tavares won't face the same fate, which he shouldn't given the system we now play where our width is provided by our wing backs.

Obviously I haven't seen much of Tavares but unlike Ponticelli, he seems to be able to control a football.

And he actually looks athletic rather than like a tubby kid running around the school field.

I think with his pace he could be a great option later in games. I can only assume his touch and link up play might be his weakest area as his pace and finishing look good. Has anyone on here honestly seen him play 90 mins for the u23 a few times and could comment on his all round ability.

I’ve seen him 8-10 times, not for a couple of months but he’s lightening quick good movement always playing on the shoulder he’s stronger than he looks and can finish...he’s still very raw, always said he reminded me on a Shaun Wright-Phillips build type of player

I have, played well in one game didn’t score and not very well in another and equalised in the last minute.

Most teams train drills in compact spaces, Players like Waghorn look good as it involves running short distances. But on full size pitches players like Tavares with their pace shine

1. Is moving your feet an official stat now?
2. Did you actually….go back and check that?!

If I was robins I’d just use him when we need to chase a game in the last ten minutes and see if he could snatch a goal….

…. oh hold on a minute?

Agree. On from the start against Preston and their centre backs would have just bullied him. Better to use him against tired minds, tired legs and when the game is stretched for now.

So the manager chose Waghorn who was up all night ill at the hotel & was awful last week over a fully fit Tavares who scored and got us a valuable point ?

Makes sense
