Michael Owen was 17 when he first played for Liverpool at a standard considerably above what we play. Wayne Rooney was 17. Robbie Fowler was 18. If you don’t give them a chance they can’t do it. We’re playing a striker who hasn’t scored in our last 15 games and the other only fir one has scored one goal all season yet we have someone within the club who appears to know where the net is. Seems to me give the guy a go if he shows he’s not up to it fair enough but he may well surprise the management team.

Owen, Fowler and Rooney weren’t young prospects who magically turned into stars because they got enough 10-minute cameos at the end of games. They played because they were supreme talents, as identified by their coaches. Tavares is a kid who does great against Barnsley U23s and Solihull reserves. None of his coaches, either here or at Rochdale, have seen enough yet to think he could make the first team better.

I don’t think anybody is suggesting he starts? would be nice to see him come off the bench at some point though to see how he does.

They were clearly ready for the first X1 though.
I remember seeing Owen play against us at 17 at Anfield and he was sensational.

I'm sure if Tavares was showing he was ready for the first team he'd be in.

Eccles is the same age and wason the bench yesterday.
Robins clearly think Tavares isn't ready, I trust his judgement.

Bit harsh, he made 18 appearances off the bench for Rochdale last season before we signed him in January. So he was obviously well thought of by Rochdale just a bit raw, but he was in and around the first team there.

I stand corrected - get him in the first team, and recall Danny Cashman to play alongside him while we’re at it.

sometimes you are a twat = nobody has suggested him playing the same role, but maybe 10 minutes at the end to see if he can maybe use the adrenaline to get his career up and running - if he is out of his depth, nothing lost, continue the development

Sometimes you don't know if they can step up until they step up. I don't think anyone is suggesting he should be a first team regular. However a bit of pace in the last 10 minutes against a tiring backline may be useful. And albeit weaker opposition, he has shown he can score goals. Not every striker is banging in goals for fun in the U23s.

Sick of hearing the "Tavares needs a chance" bollocks.

Hes 21, about 8 stone wet through and because he's scored 4 against Solihull B team people want him in the first team. This isn't football manager, I get you want to bring through an unknown youngster who will tear up the championship because he got 2 goals and an assist against Barnsley reserves, but fact is, he isn't big enough. The coaches know when he's ready. "Worth bringing on for the last 20 mins surely"

Why?

Whats his size and weight got anything to do with playing the game and having talent. Absolute dinosaur thoughts. How do you know he’s not strong?

At his age, banging in the goals for the U23s is all he can and should do and I for one, thinks he deserves a chance.

If he’s good enough, he’s big enough.

Probably but it’s got fuck all to do with him being 11 stone and ‘wet through’.

What a shit comment.

If he doesn't go out on loan, and we have dead rubbers at the end of the season, I expect he will get some minutes. Might have featured in the FA Cup with the right draw, but I think it will be game over in that competition unless Southampton suddenly decide to not take the match seriously ie play a reserve team.

We play one up front some games. It’s only started at home cos we’ve lost two strikers.

Gyokeres is the only one of our strikers who can work on his own imo as he is (relatively) quick , tall and strong

When I was first going to City games young players were constantly thrown in to test them out, and that was in the top division. Sealey, Oakey, Thomas, Gillespie, Roberts, Dyson, Butterworth, Blair, Jacobs, Gooding, Hendrie, Thompson, Hateley, English, Bodak, Bannister etc all got chances in a very short time span. Different times maybe, but until Tavares gets his chance none of us will really know if he's up to it or not. He can't do much more than what he's doing in the under 23's that's for sure. I suspect he will start to feature on the bench fairly soon and looking at the fixture overload in February particularly, a chance will mostly present itself, then its up to him.

The ones you mention are ones who ended up successful mainly - there are many others who didn’t as they were no good

The thing about the star players mentioned is that they stood out in their age groups head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch
When they moved into the first team squads they continued to stand out
I once saw Dele Alli play for MK U18s, it was incredible how much better he was than everyone else even though he was a year younger than most on the pitch
when he stepped up he continued to improve (petered out now though......)
I've seen Tavares play a few times. He's decent but doesn't stand out
He's training with the first team now so he has the chance to push on if he shows his team mates and the manager that he can make the grade
Fingers crossed for the lad

Yes of course you are correct - Martin Singleton etc. Point is though that like them he needs a chance at sometime to prove if he can make it or not. He couldn't do much more than he has done in the under 23's to justify an opportunity to take the step up.

Spot on.

One of the best individual performances I have ever seen was Cesc Fabregas in a Reserves game when he first arrived in England. Absolutely bossed the game, head & shoulders above everyone else on the pitch, including a lot of senior pros on both sides, he was just 16 years old.

However...
"Age is but a number"
"If you're good enough you're old enough" yada yada.
Players develop at different rates. Just because Tavares is 21 years old & scoring regularly at U23 level doesn't mean he's ready yet. He plays up front in a decent U23 side so naturally grabs the goals & therefore the limelight. Regular U23 viewers would probably agree with me that he's not even the standout player most weeks though.
He has potential & is developing well but is still very raw & massively needs to improve physically imo. He has a chance but he won't be thrown in before he's ready.

I have absolutely no idea how good Tavares is. I haven't seen him in the flesh at all, and as such have no real opinion on whether he is 'ready' or not. I would trust Robins to be the best judge of when that may be.

The thing that worries me the most is we have the usual suspects arguing for and against without really knowing. Those saying he is nowhere near ready etc will be the first to jump on his back if he doesn't score in his first 5 minute cameo. On the other side, he'll have a good first touch and people will be saying stick him in the first 11. He turned 21 at the weekend. He's still young. Yes, there are standout talents that break through at 16, 17, 18. Some people take longer to develop. Let's just back the lad if he gets the opportunity, show a little patience, and hopefully he makes the grade.

Totally.

Although I haven't really seen many (any?) say he's "nowhere near"?
I'd wager the biggest clamour for him is from people who have never seen him play though.

tbf, it's probably more that he's a forward, and we're somewhat lacking in fit ones, just atm.

But all the more indication he ain;t ready yet if, even then, he can't get a place on the bench last game. Same as last game(?) of last season, a dead rubber and an ideal time to give him minutes, he stayed on the bench.

Now... arguably Robins is overly cautious compared to some managers, but he was quite happy to throw Bayliss and McCallum in (albeit at a lower level) and I remember the clamour for Adams to play Kevin Thornton, back in t'day...

As you'd probably expect given their ages & the level they're playing, a lot show flashes - in that I'd say Tavares, Rus, Tyler, Ngandu.
In terms of consistency, I like G.Burroughs & Rowe at the back & Howley in midfield is a real talent for his age.
The opposition varies in quality quite wildly though.
