For me the defensive issues start with how we’re building up. It ends up looking like a 3-1-6 with the full-backs miles up the pitch and Grimes dropping into the back line.
A couple of problems with that:
Also, I think we could really do with a proper defensive specialist on the coaching staff. Someone who will drill the defensive unit and fix the basics. An Ashley Cole type addition as a coach wouldn’t be the worst “signing” we could make right now.
A couple of problems with that:
- It’s not getting the best out of Grimes.
He’s at his best in front of the midfield, central, pulling strings as the deep lying playmaker, not shuffling into LB/RB/CB to make a back three. When we lose possession his lack of pace gets exposed and lately he’s looked very frustrated. - Teams have worked us out.
Everyone knows how we want to play now, and opposition managers are deliberately targeting the space behind the full-backs, especially down our left. We’ve been punished there time and again, and Dasilva and Kitching are often in poor positions, without the pace or athleticism to recover.
