For what it is worth regarding the shooting, Sweden does have an issue with far-right and nazi sympathisers. It goes back to the war time, and having lived in the country, I have come across people (particularly from an older or wealthy demographic) who have some quite openly racist views. The sympathy for these opinions have almost certainly increased in recent years with the turmoil the country now sees itself in following the open border policy which has failed spectacularly.

Whilst I am still curious as to the motivations of this guy, I suspect it was probably a racist attack. I am afraid to say I think we will see more of these type of thing as time goes on. Sweden is a very interesting country, but the people are some of the strangest I've met anywhere in the world. There are so many introverts living in basements, and it wouldn't surprise me if this guy is one of them.

Anyone, Islamist or far right, who does this will be a mentally ill loser TBF. But clearly this isn’t unique to Sweden, we’ve had our own attacks, including the post Southport stuff, Tommy Mair, and numerous others.

This is what I was saying to you before about general anti immigrant/anti Muslim stuff and why people are reluctant to join you in it or justify it. This is where it ends up. Two cheeks of the same arse: people (Islamist or far right) getting worked up about the worst atrocities (terrorism/wars in the Middle East) committed by a very small minority of a very large group (Muslims or immigrants generally/Westerners).

Yeah, there are mental losers everywhere. Sweden is just strange though - maybe it is difficult to explain. It's a very introverted nation on the whole and I've experienced quite a few bouts of explosive anger from people before who clearly cannot deal with confrontation and bottle it up. I am probably digressing a bit as we don't know enough about this guy yet, but it is just a observation about Swedish people in general. Like the school shooter thing in the US I guess, they seem to be bred from the same lab half the time.

I know what you are saying about two cheeks of the same arse. We often talk about utopias in politics, and lack of them in the real world, but Sweden really was an amazing country 10-20 years ago. It has become so unsafe. Whilst given the nature of this attack, it probably is a bit inappropriate, it is still something I would invite you to explore a bit more, because it is quite staggering.

There are many racist people in Sweden, and as tensions rise between the immigrants and them, I predict they'll be a lot of unrest unfortunately. This shooting is absolutely horrendous though, and my fear is that it is going to be the start of some serious permanent escalation.

The world has a poor record of different cultures co existing in harmony sadly. I think it's the in built impulse of man to control and conquer others. Perhaps we haven't and never will evolve from those tribal instincts. I pin my hopes on our children and Grandchildren to do better

Does it? Violence and poverty and general misery has continually reduced as the world has got smaller and people have mixed. I think you’ve just been reading too much social media.

I like to think this is true. The internet allows people to live out some of their fantasies and say things they just wouldn't do in a situation where face to face consequences were going to occur.

Was talking to a school friend who was saying how racism isn’t really a thing and we were both friends with a couple of black brothers in the early 80’s who were treated shockingly by some and great by others and obviously we were great mates
He was blind to it

Without a doubt, but let's not take it for granted.

We've got the three main superpowers run by egomaniacs, psychopaths and idiots who can be very volatile and unpredictable. All of them are in some way or another looking to expand territory and are becoming more isolationist, both of which are big factors in wars and conflict.

Then we've got the climate problems and massively inflating global population, along with a massive divide between the haves and have-nots, leading to increasing numbers of displaced and migratory people, leading to animosity and conflict.

Plus we've not got almost no-one left who can remember first hand the horrors of a mass conflict, and certainly none in any position to use that experience to temper the fire. So it gets sanitised and people don't seem to fear it as much.

If you were an historian looking back on this after the fact you'd look at those factors, amongst others, as to signs conflict was on the way.

I'm not saying it's inevitable (and with modern weapons you have to hope not) but it's certainly looking far more likely than any time since the Cold War.

That’s the age old argument as has been said the definition came about so we could treat people convicted or planning it differently from everyone else
Now we could just say everyone is capable of terror attacks or violence and take a hit and Miss attempt at security or we could limit it to a smaller group and not treat everyone without rights

Makes me laugh the right tutting over mass shooting by right wingers (if that is the case here).
These sort of extreme male loners filled with hate and resentment will find something else to direct hatred too if immigration wasnt an issue to blame for their situation.... and would target hate towards gay community, trans people, local Council's, religion, ex-employer, mysogony, ex- partner, or ex-school, or sometimes even turning on their own family and yes mental illness might play a part whoever and whatever the ideology.
That said its something that needs government to set up like a walk in centre for them to talk and get help before urges and hatred escalates like this so they can talk and get help.
Social media and anyone deliberately expressing any form of hatred online and by disguised racist politicians has blood on their hands when people go on gun or knife sprees whatever the motivation.
Education helps grow tolerance.

I often wonder what stops me following through with violent intent I did it once in an argument with my wife and punched a hole in a wall and once on myself and ran about three times further than I meant to
Every other time I’ve managed it and brought it under control
I am hugely privileged of course and have nothing to be angry about
