It's so obvious I must be wrong. We're lumping the ball up and it's coming straight back. Even someone like Clive Platt , who wasn't the quickest off the mark , would do a job. The players we have up front aren't physically able to cope with a line of 6 ft defenders week in week out.
On an earlier thread I sort of suggested Rose in that role. After yesterday I'll forget that idea and move on.
There's nothing wrong with long ball but don't just lump it. Play intelligent balls that the strikers or wingers can run into.
The only way to score with hoofball is from free kicks and corners. So in that respect a little un that harries a defender into a mistake is just as effective. But you still need someone who is capable of putting the ball in the back of the net, be he big small fat thin old young.....
I'd take a goal scorer over a target man. Despite his height Beavon seems to know how to get on the right side of defenders and create something. The pass he made to Rose just before his cross come shot that had the keeper scrambling was decent and from a midfield position that none of our midfielders would have been able to think about let alone play
I watched Lincoln v Ipswich and their centre forward Rhead was a man mountain 6'4' and played a perfect game quite skilfully held the ball and won headers and appropriately laid the ball off. He would cost us a small fee and do a job until the end of season.
