One of his. He has one decent game in ten and then like tonight does fuck all and can’t be bothered.

Wilson 6 Ideally he does better for their first goal

MVE 5 As good (and as bad) as he was elsewhere in this game, that may be a career-defining mistake
Thomas 6
Kitching 6
Dasilva 6

Grimes 7 MOTM
Sheaf 5
Rudoni 7

Sakamoto 7 Big call in terms of making him effective on Tuesday
BTA 6 I hoped it would work but we were so direct that he was barely in the game
Wright 6 Probably should have scored

EMC 6 If he’s fit, I would start him on Tuesday, he’s a much better fit for this system
Allen 6 Fair play for the bicycle kick

It’s half-time in a game that we were mostly in control of. I would not expect them to offer much on Tuesday - time for Lampard to show his worth. Didn’t he come back from this same deficit against Leeds with Derby?

How can you give Wright a 6. He did fuck all yet again. His attitude stinks. He turns up for one game in 10. What did he actually do to merit a 6.

He was the man on the end of most of our good chances tonight. I thought he had a disappointing game by his standards but he is usually much more effective than you’re suggesting. Need him to get his shit together on Tuesday.

Lot of Sheaf hate again after one poor game. He's been much better recently and was doing ok until he got booked. Two lovely balls out to the wing. Once he was booked he dropped off too much, but certainly not to blame for the first and not on the pitch for the second.

We're not out of this and as poor as Simms has been recently, I think not starting him was a mistake and we can still do this. Have a feeling he starts Tuesday and puts a big show on.

Rudi, Tats, Grimes and Dasilva 7 (Tats motm) everyone else 6. Even MVE with his bad pass still made our goal and did ok the rest of the game.

Grimes the only real stand out for me tonight. Sakamoto not too far behind. Credit to Rudoni for doing what he has been doing all season.

I'd like for us to get a bit more creative with set pieces. I noticed Sunderland tried a couple of different things tonight, which thankfully we were alert to. Although we are not lacking when it comes to scoring from set pieces, we are predictable, whether that be the long through or surrounding the keeper, i just feel like we need to attempt to catch them off guard going into the second leg.

A lot for the coaching staff to ponder on, i'm sure they'll have some ideas up their sleeves.

Only one goal behind, could have been worse. Not going to drag Milan out, he was obviously devastated at the end there. Hopefully the boys can pick him up and give everything they've got on Tuesday.

Wilson - 5 could've done better for the first goal , never seems to set his feet right .
MvE - 5 love him , did brilliantly for the equaliser but cost us the game
Thomas - 6 steady but gambled on an offside decision for the opener
Kitching - 7 another steady game and was trying to shit house their forwards from early on
DaSilva - 7 our best left back and dangerous crosses in the second half
Grimes - 8 easily our best player tonight , easy to criticise someone being slow in possession when noone is offering in front of him
Sheaf - 4 was poor , hit a few decent passes but tonight he needed to be better
Rudoni - 7 too deep first half but is our best attacking player currently
Wright - 4 just try harder , show some aggression, anticipate better
Sakamoto -7 glimpses of the Tats we all love tonight, needs to do it more
BTA - 5 tried but isn't a starting forward in this system

Subs
EMC - 6 thought he did well when he came on , showed for the ball , battled well too
Allen - 6 gave us a spark and again showed well

All in all such a frustrating night

I think we were too predictable all round unfortunately. Probably where we miss Torp who provides more creativity or Allen's busyness.

We drop him though and put in the striker who hasn't scored since 15th Feb?

Who is the one striker who can pretty much win a game all by himself? It's Wright.

I am sure we will see a better Wright on Tuesday. If not, he's off.

But if Simms plays, I think you have to play Wright too. BTA struggled last night.

No hate from me, but he was poor. I would be tempted to replace him with Allen on Tuesday. Simms for BTA too. Starting BTA was a bizarre decision from FL.

Grimes head and shoulders above anyone else in Sky Blue last night.

Philosophical about it all really. Still looking forward to going up on Tuesday. Still think we can do it.

Sakamoto is two footed, why doesn't he switch wings occasionally just to mix things up a bit. Time after time this season we see defenders doubling up on him every time he receives the ball, which is pre planed. Sunderland actually had three on him while Wright hugs the left touchline with his hands on his hips. Put Sakamoto on the left after 15 mins move Wright into the center with whoever else is there and at least throw the oppositions pre match plans a bit. We are so predictable at the moment the way we set up and play. Sunderland did their homework on us to a T.

The wedge will be spent. And more. There is no yellow brick road. As Burnley and Sheffield United will discover.

I hate all the unkindness on here when we lose. It is not as if wright did not try, he went all over the place to get the ball as did Rudoni, who was closely shepherded all game. Has it not occured to people that on the day Sunderland's players were better and specifically better marshalled than City. It was not a want of effort. On the contrary, it was a lack of tactical wit . Down to Frank

Although I will grant you that Sheaf is now pondorous and slow. Having both Grimes and Sheaf in the team puts far too much onus on Rudoni for creativity. You need a Torp like player, altho better than him, alongside Grimes and rudoni

But I'm in 13 so got a very good view of him 2nd half and he just seemed half hearted.

This just isn’t true. The amount of times he had two or three runners off the back line and both fullbacks to hit in space and he passed it sideways was ridiculous.

Wilson 5

2 attempts at him, 2 goals conceded. Still, Collins would have also conceded both and thrown one into his own net for good measure. Small mercies and all that.

MVE 6

Did great all night and had some kind of brainfart. Always looking for space and raced back in his usual fashion to cover. Great assist.

JDS 7

I got laughed at for saying play him wide left with Bidwell at LWB and Haji in middle. Anyway, JDS got forward well and did his job at the back. Still think he’s a better advanced than defensive player.

Thomas 6

Thought he played the offside trap
Ok, just the Lino got it wrong. Still. Did ok.

Kitching 6

Should have made a meal out of being grabbed. Watch it back.

Grimes 7

Bossed the game but should have spotted through runs quicker instead of constantly looking to go wide. Watch back at how Torp cut through last time out by going through the lines.

Sheaf 5

You know when your iPhone goes down to 10% and switches to low power mode or whatever, Sheaf reminds me of a person in constant low power mode. A bit dim and less able to react. Even in the tunnel before gave he didn’t look fully charged. He’s the skipper - where’s the getting into the ear of the Ref? Where’s the rallying of the team? His attempt at goal when he had bags of time was hilarious. “Best stats in the blah blah at blah blah” is the line trotted out by the usual suspects on here. Look: his stats are good because he passes backwards, or, like last night he found a player in bags of space out wide. We turned down £8m for him? FFS. Anyway, he played poorly last night. Drop him next match and get Bidwell left and with the armband. JDS WM, Rudoni BBM with Grimes deep and EMC roving and probing as an AM. Worth a try.

Rudoni 8

Plus one for the goal. Busy. Got around well.

Wright 6

FFS he got walloped and kicked early on by some little bloke and ended up apologising to HIM. Haji, you look and sound like a 6foot4 LA gang member. START INTIMIDATING DEFENDERS. Anyway, did ok in parts, should have put himself about more.

BTA 6

He’s not a target man, he’s a race on to through balls at pace player. Crosses aren’t for him. Has the first touch of a bent 50p - could go anywhere. Mad choice.

Tats 7

Lively. Should have got at the lb more after the booking.

Subs

Can’t be bothered.

Haji - 18 touches, 6 passes, 0 take-ons. Possibly worst I've seen him play. You'd have thought playing a team he'd scored 4 against, he'd be full of confidence, but he played like he was in a huff that BTA started down the middle

Get a grip lads. That was daylight robbery by Sunderland. We’re 1-0 down going into the next 90 minutes against a team we know we can beat. And Sunderland will be very nervous if we get the first goal. Onto Tuesday and a very iconic performance. We’ve been here before and got it done.
