Really? East Midlands? A derby? Would Luton be a derby? Oxford?

I hate it when journos automatically call local games a 'derby'.

Is Manchester United v Wigan a derby?

They've been calling places in the West Midlands East Midlands for years, especially the BBC. Which is particularly galling given that we're the one with a county named after us: there is no place called The East Midlands, it's just a vague geographical region. And even then, doesn't include Cov and Brum. Ask wiki! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Midlands

If you want to be picky then we are East Midlands. Meriden is the centre of England, and Cov is east of it.

so technically - if you were to draw a line due south from that reference - the majority of the City is to the West - but the Ricoh is to the East -so we play in the east of the middle point of England !!!!!!

swot or wot !!!

Perhaps someone should tell our manager too, who referred to it as a derby in his after match interview on CWR.

Maybe he got the teams confused and thought we were playing Derby County?

West Midlands is a political construct and not worth mentioning.

Years ago there was a play at the Belgrade called Risky City - which was about Coventry. The kid in the play got it right - "No-one wants us, we have no identity. We're not Jocks, or Geordies, or Brummies. We;re West Midlands Gas, and East Midlands Electricity. We're nothing."

Well in terms of political boundaries, The West Midlands exists. And as someone who works for Warwickshire County Council, Coventry may as well be in Guadeloupe when it comes to getting a bit of local co-operation and co-ordination! It's bureaucracy gone mad, I tells ye. But I was always raised to believe that Coventry and Birmingham "are in Warwickshire really.."

It also really annoys me as a Warwickshire-dweller, as I feel like Cov has been nicked from me by, as is pointed out, a political construct! Especially when you consider the areas history and the significance of Coventry. Anyone who watched the Michael Wood series on the Middle Ages would know that Leicester-Coventry most certainly is a derby in terms of local links...as someone who played in the South Leicestershire Cricket League for years, boy did I feel that ancient rivalry deeply (bloody Rednecks...) Leicester and Birmingham? Not quite the same historical links.

And it also annoys me because Warwickshire County Cricket Club play in Birmingham still..they should be forced to move to Kenilworth!

And possibly the final word on this comes from the nice lady on Central News:

"There were two East versus West clashes in the Midlands this weekend, and it was the West Midlands sides that came out on top in both".

So there. ITV are normally worse than the beeb, but they got this one right.
